Is there one that's simple and dependable? I remember threads here before Christmas talking about Zune's problems, so I bought a Sansa. But it has a habit of freezing up and erasing playlists and not seeing music. I wonder if maybe maybe it's just a lemon and maybe Sansa is actually a good product.

Thoughts?

I love my Sansa, it's 4gb, and aside from a few screws in the back falling out (resultingin a turn off every time I set tht thing down, but nothing that a little ductape couldn't fix) it's been great. It has frozen up a few times and I've had to reset it and put all my music back on, but my iPod used to do that too.

And just a word of advice. When I bought it at Circuit City my mom bought the "hassle free" Small Electronics Package. Which was supposed to send me a CC gift card if this Sansa went sour. Well now that the warantee is almost up, I figure I'll make good on those loose screws. I have to ship the thing to OK to make sure it's REALLY broken. Then they'll send me a new one.
Hassle free my behind. Missing my MP3 player for a week is not hassle free to me.

But I digress, the Sansa is good.

Among the major brands, failure rates and other difficulties are roughly proportional to the complexity of the features offered. The players that do the least are typically simpler than those that do the most.

we all have the creative zen mp3 players and have never had any issues with them. we have the basic ones and our kids have the creative zen V.

It's a matter of the more you ask the electronics to do, the more complicated the device is.

I would have to recommend the Ipod. DH and I have had ours 2 1/2 yrs and never had one issue (and we have the extended warranty). DS has had one for 2 yrs that still works and we just got him a new larger gb one for Christmas. DD got an 8 GB Nano. They are easy to use, ITUNES is great, they look "cool" and they last. We love Ipods. :lovestruc

Before these, DS had an Iriver that broke and was replaced by Best Buy twice. DD had a Creative Zen that does not have the features she wants now, and not as user friendly.

I bought a Sansa for my Dfi for Christmas and it's got every feature on it. It can do MP3's,video,FM radio, pictures and a voice recorder. I've only played with a little bit but it's seems pretty easy to use. Hopefully it'll last and not have any problems. It's easy to "sync" using Windows media player 10 or 11.

Yes, the key is using Windows media player 10, rather than whatever I had on my retro IBM 286 circa 1996. :)

If you had a 286 in 1996, it was already 10 years out of date!!!

Look at me just buying an mp3 player. I've always wanted something to fit into the pockets of my parachute pants. My Sony Walkman cassette tape player is just too bulky!

I have a Creative Zen and an Ipod Touch and I love them both. The Zen is a little basic compared to the Ipod, but it's really cute and simple to use.

Style wise, you can't beat Bang & Olufsen or Apple. Apple's iPods are probably more practical though.

I have an old Sansa and I love it. I do have to use Windows Media Player 10 or above with it.

iPod. We currently have a 30gb photo, 4gb nano, and 1gb shuffle. All are great.

I'm a fan of Cowon/iAudio MP3 players, I own two of them. They sound much better than iPods. When you interface it to your PC the Flash/HDD appears as a PC drive, so you can organize your tunes exactly as they're stored in your PC library. Unless you get all of your music through iTunes, I've found this to be a much simpler interface. The bottom line is audio quality, IMHO, and iPods come up short in this category. Cowon/iAudio offer custom EQ and other audio processing functions. They sound great.

Hubby has a Zune and he likes it, but he was very perturbed when he found at that they don't come compatible with vista:confused:

for my 8 yo, we got him a sansa c250 and its perfect for him. haven't had any freezing issues with it as of it *knock on wood* :)
