Which Military Branch?

In watching Reagan's funeral processions this week, I keep coming up with one question... of all of the military branches that are represented, which is the one who wears the white outfit, sailor cap and spats? Is that a dress uniform of the Coast Guard, Merchant Marines? I'm just not sure and a google search left me no closer to knowing which branch it is.

TIA

I thought it was Navy too. If I remember correctly enlisted below a certain rank have those whites as their dress uniform.

I originally thought it was Navy, but there was someone in dress whites with long pants and no spats. The one to which I'm referring has on knickers with the spats.

Is that still Navy? I'm just not sure.

I think Lisa F is right. Both of the people you are referring to are probably Navy. My guess is the one indress whites is a senior Enlisted or Officer, and the one with spats is junior Enlisted.

Unfortunately I am familiar with the AF, and have NEVER been able to figure out Navy uniforms!!

The man in white uniform, spats and dixie cup (sailor hat) is Navy. This is the dress for those who are in the ceremony. My DH wears this when he does color guard, or any ceremony for retiring officers, new officer coming on board, etc. They usually carry a rifle, or flag, or lead the procession... I could be wrong, but this is as much as i know! :p

I had been wondering this also!! They kept saying that the Coast Guard was represented also but I never saw any that I know of.

I have often heard the White Dress uniform of the Navy referred to as CRACKER JACKS. :)

They were there. I saw a few CGs during various parts of the ceremony acting as both guards and pallbearers. Their uniform was, IIRC, dark blue jacket with shirt and tie, white billed service cap, and dark blue trousers.

From left to right:

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Marines, Coast Guard, Navy, Army.

OK I see the diff. now. I thought the coast guard was another Air Force .I did not notice the difference in the hats.

I've had military family for so long, I was rattling off the branches of services off to my students (the funeral was on in the classroom)

Fellow adults and students were well... suprised that I knew them.

My dad and sister were both in the Army and Air Force
My old boyfriend was Coast Guard
My uncle was in the Navy

And anyone who has seen A few Good Men, knows a Marine dress uniform.

I was busy looking at everything but the hats. with not having a close up look like the picture posted the blue in the Coast Guard and the blue in the Air Force looked the same. I am not from a military family but I did know most of them I just could not ever figure out why I could not see the Coast Guard. Now I will know to look at the hats as well!!

Does anyone know, is the break up always that way, ie Air Force and Coast Guard only have 1 while the other's have 2? I know it would always be the case that 2 branches would also need to have only 1, but I wonder if it's always the same 2 or it somehow rotates.
