Which Kindle?

Looking to buy DS a used kindle. All he needs it for is to read. He has an ipad that he uses the kindle app on, but I will not let him take that to school. I figured if I find him a cheap, used kindle, that will work just fine. Plus, save space on his bookshelf!! He is quite the reader. I didn't realize there were so many different kinds. I know I don't want to buy the fire, but with the kindle touch, the kindle with special offers, etc. Anyone have any advice?

I have an old Kindle with the keyboard, which I love. However, it no longer has working 3G or WiFi so I only have old books/games on it. The only way to load new books is to download them to my computer then transfer to the Kindle.

When I finally break down and buy a new Kindle, I will get the paperwhite. It is great for reading and I am looking forward to using the light feature.

I will still keep my keyboard Kindle for games.

The Kindle touch with offers would be my suggestion. Wifi required version in my opinion is enough too, I don't think he needs the more expensive 3g one that is able to download new books even when there is no wifi available.



One reason I like the touch because if I don't know the meaning of a word I can touch and hold the word and it will take me to the dictionary for a definition.
I also feel it is easier to navigate then the one with a button at the bottom.

The offers don't pop up or anything they are just an ad that comes on like a screen saver when the Kindle is idle. The original price is higher to purchase without offers so it will likely be passed along in a used sale price.Most often the ad on mine is for a new release book on Amazon.

You might want to check the school rules. At my niece and nephew's school only e-readers are allowed. Kindles that can have apps and such are not allowed.

I am fine with the school, it won't have any games or anything on it. It is solely an e reader, which is why I am looking to know which one would be the best.

Hubby & I got Kindle Paperwhites for Christmas (which we LOVE) Our 13 year old got a Kindle Touch (with special offers) for Christmas last year. He loves to read. When I upgraded I gave my Kindle Touch to my 10 year old. I can honestly say he reads more on the Kindle than he ever did with regular books.
The older is in Middle School & the younger in Elementary School. Ipads & Kindle Fires are not allowed in their Schools.

Honestly any of them would be perfect. I'd go with anything except maybe the first and second versions of the kindle just because those used will be years old. The newest basic Kindles are only $69 new so if any version is more than that used I'd go with the basic Kindle, it'll be no frills but since all you want him to be able to do is read it will be perfect. If he'd prefer a touch screen the touch would work. I always suggest going with the special offers version just because if you're buying new its $20 cheaper and all the special offers mean is that there's a small bar with an ad at the bottom of the home screen (your list of books) and the screensaver is an ad, none of which are bothersome or intrude with reading.

The 69$ version is great. My DD just got hers today for her birthday and loves it. She tried out mine and fell in love but had no clue I would get her one. She goes through books quite fast too so I know she will use it a lot.

Another vote here for the Kindle touch, we have the wi-fi with ads version. The ads are not intrusive at all, as another poster mentioned, they only appear when the unit is idle. We also have a fire, fire hd and fire 8.9, and our daughter has an iPad through school and she much prefers the iPad for apps and such so if all your looking for is an e-reader then the touch with special offers is the way to go. BTW, the battery life on these is amazing!
