Which job should I take????? Help please

Ok here goes. I wonder if anyone will respond to this. Somehow, not only am I thread killer, but I do it to myself!!

I have moved to IN from MA the first week in January. I have a delima with jobs.

Job 1: A auto appraiser job, which I have done, nothing new or exciting. Two weeks training in WA in March. The job is 40 away from home, two different highways and they are thinking about switching to saturdays but who will be doing that is a random pick. The money is a little more than what I what i was making in MA which is odd.... starts 2/23

Job 2: Medical Adjuster job, something new and different, I like learning and i am interested in the medical field. The job is 25 minutes in traffic at the end of the day, no highways, no saturdays, no travel for training HQ are here. Not sure about the exact money but it's comprable. Starts 3/15

Money isn't necessaryily a huge issue because it's within the rang. Job 1 I have the offer and can start 2/23
Job 2 is doing the background check now and if that comes back clean they will make an offer hopefully by 2/21 or 2/23. Background check will come back clean....

What to do???????? I want the second job because it seems more interesting and doing somethign I like but with different materials...... but it's a what if game if SOMETHING falls through..

What would you do????

Thanks for the responses.

My fiance doesn't think that turning down the first one without the actual offer for the second one in my hand is a good idea. We both agree that if I got stuck working Saturdays I would probally start looking elsewhere, he doesn't want me to do that.

Vacation and all that is comparalbe... 17 total days a year...

The concern is not having a actual offer in hand just the knowledge that one will be coming shortly.....

What ifs?????

I career path and growth they are comprable. They are both large nationwide companies and they are both similar starting positions just different types of insurance.

Are you in need of immediate employment? If you can do without a job for awhile, then I would wait for the second one. I always do the 'worse case ' trial. What is the worse thing that will happen if you don't take the first and then don't get the second? Will there be other jobs you can find/get? Will you starve to death while waiting? Those are the kinds of answers I always ask. If you will be better off in the long run with the second (or another job besides the first) then I say wait.

Are you planning on having a family soon? Will you work once you have a baby? Is one or other of the jobs more family friendly ie the possibility of job-sharing or working from home?

All other things being equal, I would choose job #2. Maybe you will hear from them earlier than the 22nd or 23rd. Starting something new is really exciting. Good luck.

I personally would go with #2. Have you thought about calling the 2nd job and explaining that you are very interested but have another offer and need to make a decision? People do it all the time. If they are in a position to make an offer they will but at least you'll know where you stand. Good luck.

Try asking each employer for a name of someone who is currently working in the same or similar job that you're applying for who wouldn't mind you asking them a few questions. Then talk to each of them, ask them what they like about the job and the company and what they don't like. I've hired lots of people and we usually have a "team interview" where the candidates always ask my team members these types of questions.

I'd take the 2nd job. In Indy, I'd say that the medical field is pretty stable, and there are many hospital jobs to get. Also, the close commute would do it for me.

I think CEDmom gave some excellent advice. Call the 2nd employer and tell then you're really interested in this job, but you have another offer on the table. You can't wait another week or so to hear from them and could they possibly quicken up the process. As she said, it happens all the time, and if they truly want you, they will get you an offer faster than the original time period quoted.
