Which items should I get at Costco?

Here's our list of Costco staples:
  • Paper Towels
  • TP
  • Einstein Bagels (we freeze them)
  • Pretzles (the big bin)
  • Crystal Light
  • Orange Juice
  • Milk (they have the cheapest price around)

Costco is 2 miles from my house. We go there like it is the supermarket. We are one of the few people to go into Costco, pick up what we need, and leave without a full basket.

Well, we have an extra fridge and deep freeze and the closest Costco is almost 20 miles away, so I stock up.

Frozen chicken
Extra sharp cheddar cheese
half and half
Coffee- whole beans
Hummus
Naan
Romaine lettuce
Whipped cream
Pizza
Salmon

TVs
DVRs

Dog food

Toilet paper
paper towels

We get a LOT of stuff there!

We buy the dog food (almost the same as the Blue Buffalo brand we were buying)
cannoli kits (although I didn't see them the last time we were there)
organic frozen green beans and mixed veggies
pita crackers to dip in hummus
hummus
huge tub of green and black greek olives with feta (I cut up to add to the hummus)
quaker oats to make homemade granola
unsalted butter
polarized sunglasses, kirkland brand for $31.99, case and microfiber included and look much nicer than any designer brand they had!
maple syrup
organic spring mix salad
organic olive oil
organic herbs (dried like rosemary, basil and oregano)
cinnamon, it's saigon cinnamon and smells and tastes so good
cases of kirkland spring bottles water, 35 for like $3.59
perrier water
panko bread crumbs
big bags of pecans, walnuts and almonds
a couple months ago we bought a cusinart ice cream mixer, $40 and it came with 2 freezer bowls
clothes
last week we bought the kids their lunchboxes for $11.99, came with a stainless steel bottle, small ice pack (or you can heat it to keep food warm) and are lead-free and BPA-free
back pack for $15.99 too
the Harry Potter Lego Xbox game was $43 instead of $60 everywhere else
Honest kids waters for $9-something
Ecos laundry detergent

We always buy:
Polly-O string cheese
Gogurt (the only place I can find the simple ones- no artifical colors or flavors. No high fructose corn syrup either, I think.)
almonds
rotiss. chicken
dog food
batteries
cleaning wipes
vitamins
honey

Used to buy cheese slices but now ours carries Land o' Lakes instead of Kraft and I don't really care for them.

This week I bought binders and dry erase markers for really great prices.

I agree with a few of the other posters, I don't find their paper products to be a good deal at all. Maybe if you didn't have another big box store in the area or just like the convenience of buying a bunch at once, but strictly for saving, not really.

regular things we buy there-

water
toilet paper
paper towels
cascade
tissues
ground beef
salmon
crab cakes
printer ink (when there is a coupon)
batteries
mac and cheese
soup
butter
goldfish
yogurt
mandarin oranges
toothbrushes
hot chocolate
romaine lettuce
grapes
rotisserie chicken
eggs

I got my list of stuff to look at together. It now consists of :

Costco Zyrtec
Herbal Essences Shampoo (if they have the kind I need)
Cat food (our cat eats a Urinary health formula of canned)
Dog Jerky Treats
Croissants/muffins/share a cake(?)
Yeast for bread machine
Quart & Gallon Baggies
Paper Towels
Disposable foam Coffee Cups w/lids
Meat

Of course, price will matter. I know what I can buy stuff here locally for, and unless it is a great deal, we really won't need a gallon of shampoo.

It will be interesting to see what I do end up buying.
:)

A couple of our favorite things at Costco are the Kirkland brand canned chicken (much better than grocery store brands) and little boxes of organic chocolate milk.

We also love the coffee cups (disposable). Other than that:

Folgers coffee
Kirkland water (super cheap for 35)
Welch's fruit snacks
peanut butter

For us - 2 adults - we buy:

milk (2 gals for $4 and I find it fresher than stores)
bread $5.00 for 2 XL loafs of good wheat and oat nut (freeze one loaf because you have to buy 2 but they are mix/match)
instant breakfast boxed $8 box and has 30 packs in it
butter ($6-7 for 3 lbs)
Ham lunch meat (freeze one of the pkgs) $8 for 4 lbs
veggies and salad (great pre mix salads for $4 and aspargus $4, artichokes $5 for 4, tomatoes $4 for 8 on the vine, bananas $2 for a bunch of 8, box of navel oranges $9 for 5 lbs
soda, $8 case for diet coke (30 cans)
bottled water $3 case (36 btls)
Charmin toilet paper ($18 for ?? rolls..way more than target)

I try to go about once a month or so:

Crystal light
water
sometimes juice boxes (depends on who has them on sale)
tissues
trash bags
dishwasher soap
Mickey nuggets
waffels
shredded cheeze
sliced cheeze (if they have it)
Hamburgers
ballpark hotdogs
milk
snacks
oreos
as a special treat, the choc chip cookie icecream bars, yum!

I ended up getting :

2lb yeast $3.59 (OMG! This was such an amazing deal! I am used to paying $2 for 3 little packets at the store - gave some of this to my mom)
3lb dog chicken jerky (they LOVE this - and it is a good deal too!) $15
2-6pk muffins $6.xx (banana nut & blueberry)
1-pk of 48 Costco brand AA batteries $10.99 (we always run out of AA's)
1-pk of 24 Chicken Cup O' Noodles $6.xx (DS loves these!)
1-pk of Costco brand Zyrtec $15.xx
1- slice pepperoni pizza $1.99
1- refillable 20oz soda $.59

I will need to go back!! We don't live close enough to get a membership, but can use my mom's if I go with her (as I did today). I saw some stuff that was higher than I thought it would be (like soda pop), but other stuff was a great deal.

Yeah the batteries are a great deal. I always get gas. I try to go when there's samples! I got from this board that costco clearance ends in 97. that's the only way you know it's clearance most of the time. I buy the bagels but only the boring whole wheat because they are the only ones without high fructose corn syrup.

Only get the catfood in the purple bag- it's really good quality. From a penny pinchers standpoint- easier on vet bills and ahem....they absorb the better quality food better==less waste. They've come out with a cheaper one lately in a yellow bag that's not any good.
I've decided I'd like to try getting the muffins as you can simply wrap what you don't eat right away with that press stuff and freeze them. they are so good and fresh. Also scoop away when they have it on coupon--it is such a good buy.

A couple of our favorite things at Costco are the Kirkland brand canned chicken (much better than grocery store brands) and little boxes of organic chocolate milk.
Oh yeah-- that canned chicken is really really good!
