A man to be mistaken as a woman or a woman to be mistaken as a man?

I was on the train last night when someone got up and walked straight towards the door, dropping something on the way. A man sitting a few seats behind grabbed the item off the floor and called "Miss". The person that had gotten up turned around (not responding to the Miss - just to wait at the train door) and the helpful man immediatly added "Ster" to his earlier comment. The passenger that had got up to leave was a man - a big harley davidson man at that, but he had shoulder length hair. The man sitting a few seats behind only saw the long hair and I guess just assumed it was a woman walking away.
