Best for potato salad?

Best for a baked potato?

Best for mashed potatos?

Serioulsy, I never get this right. Seems like I always use the wrong potato.
 
Potato salad - any waxy potato that holds up well - I like Yukon or Red.
Baked Potato - Russett
Mashed Potatos - Yukon

Yep. There is even a type of sweet potato with purple flesh and sorry guys, I'm technically challanged when it comes to posting photos, but the name of this potato is Okinawan or Molokai Sweet Potato. It is on the back left of the plate.

Red potatoes are my favorite- I use them for pretty much everything except baking, can't beat a russett for that!
 
Mermaid, I second that!!! I always make my mashed potaotes with baby reds. Boil them for about 20 minutes. Drain. Add some butter, milk, a touch of sour cream, salt and pepper. Mash. YUM! Add some chedder cheese sometimes too. MMMM!! I always leave the skin on too :)

I'm starving now!!

red potatoes for potato salad
russet potatoes for baked
I don't care about the rest. Ordinary potatoes do for mashed, or fries in this house. Actually, it's mostly instant mashed and frozen fries, but shhh :ssst: Betty Crocker makes the best au gratin too!
 
nwdisgal - I agree. We just put 150# of Yukon Golds in for the winter. They grew great this year. :goodvibes
 
I concur with the majority about the red potatoes but as far as baking - not our favorite so we typically use sweet potatoes for baking. Add a touch of butter and cinnamon and voila!

This is definitely the most nutritious way to go. We enjoy them from time to time too.

I use the baby reds for potato salad, I like the taste, but it's really because I am lazy...so all I do is cut them in half and make the salad....no peeling of skins. I also use the baby reds to make fried potatoes for the same reason, you wash them cut them in half and fry them up.

Baked, I like russets, we do not like sweet potatoes in my house.

Mashed, I'll use anything for those.
