So I'm out of my element on this one. My niece, whom I love to pieces, is going to be 9 this year and I had already decided on getting her clothes for Christmas but after talking with my sister I'm even more decided on it. My niece isn't fat but has quite a belly on her b/c according to her ped she has muscles that she needs to work. My sister says her belly is so pronounced (I live in a different state) she has a hard time finding clothes and now the kids at school are beginning to pick on her. My niece has always been a little socially awkward but now my heart really goes out to her b/c I was just like her at her age and even though I know clothes won't fix anything when I went through it not having trendy clothes just made it worse. So I'd like to get her one or two nice tops but wasn't sure what the "it" place was nowadays. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I've never heard of Justice, but Limited Too is fashionable up to about age 12 around here. Then they want to shop at Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle and Aeropostale.

If she's got a belly on her, be careful about what you pick - some of the tops can be quite short, and some styles are pretty tight.

Hmm... my daughter is 10 and the most popular brands with girls her age are (in this order) 1) Abercrombie & Fitch, 2) Hollister, 3) Aeropostale, 4) Limited Too, and 5) Old Navy. A&F and Hollister are so expensive, though, that few girls actually have many items from those stores, but they treasure what do they have, lol. Aeropostale is much more reasonable.

We have a Justice store at the nearest outlet mall, but I don't know that many girls around here even know what it is. To me, it's so similar to Limited Too that I don't think it matters.

Limited Too does have a good range of sizes, as well as "Plus" and "Slim" for non-average builds, so they would probably be your best bet for her. :) Check to see if Justice also offers those, and then pick whichever's most convenient.

my DD is a little older so we don't shop at limited too anymore, but when we did, I would always stay away from their tees. They tended to be a little tight around the belly area.

I would go for more of the loose fit tops that they have now. We never did well with the babydoll tees and I am glad to see not as many of them. We always tried to get the ones that were fitted at the top and lose at the bottom.

My daughter and her friends love Justice. She wears a uniform to school, but all of her other clothes are from Justice. She is a beanpole (like her Dad) but many of her friends still have a belly and they look nice in the clothes.

I like the shirts because they are cute, but not trashy. They are often an empire/trapeeze style which is flattering to any shape. Also, I like the Justice monkey!

I have a 10 yr old so I'm well acquainted with Limited Too. I believe Justice is owned by the same company, and is a more affordable version. Kind of like Gap and Old Navy. We don't have Justice around here, but I read that all Limited Too stores are converting to Justice in the next 1-2 years. Anyway, some of the hoodie tops at L2 seemed like they skimmed over the tummy area.

Yes, Justice is the lower price point for the Limited Too store. Both are owned by the company that owns The Limited, Bath & Body Works, Lane Bryant, Structure, and a few other brands. I have also heard that all Limited Too's will be converted to Justice's. Their clothing style is very similar. We only have a Justice in town, but it's a VERY popular store with the preteen set.

Limited Too is pricier than Justice, but you can find coupons for both. She may be old enough where a gift card would be the best option though. That way they can shop after Christmas and get more for the money.

The A-line or baby doll tops are pretty popular, and those may be more flattering for her than the skin tight t-shirts.

Justice usually does a good job of making tops that go to mid-thigh, which I really like.

Also, Old Navy might be a good option too. I know that's a popular brand for kids at my daughter's elementary school.

Whatever you do, don't buy those horrible knit pants/shorts/skirts with the writing across the tush. Nothing quite as heartrending as seeing an 8 year old with "tasteee" across her keister!

My cousin (I buy a lot of her clothes) is almost 8, but also has a belly. I buy her a lot of babydoll style or a line shirts that are a little longer. Those tops and cute leggings make up most of her wardrobe. SHe also likes skirtS (especially if they are elastic waist TCP had some cute ones this fall, but your niece is probably too old for that). It might be hard to buy stuff without her trying it on first though. When I go shopping without my cousin trying the stuff on, I usually end up returning half of it. So in this case you might be better off with a gift card.

I like buying clothes for my nieces, but I always include a gift receipt. That way I still feel I am being personal, but it gives them an out if they don't like it or it doesn't fit. Last Christmas I was told I did a good job!!

My 9yo (and all of her friends) love Justice, and I find the shirts are roomier and more age appropriate than Limited Too. Also, Gymboree Online has plus sizes up to size 12, so that might have some options for you.

Good luck finding what you want!

My DD is now 11 :sad1: and she prefers Hollister, Abercrombie and Aeropostle. However, at your nieces age she LOVED Justice. I like Justice more than Limited 2 because I feel the clothes are more age appropriate. I still shopped at L2 but was very selective of what I bought her. I think a lot of the clothes as L2 are very form fitting and are made for a tall skinny girl.
I think you will do better at Justice and she will look adorable in her new outfits :)

Does Justice carry plus sizes?
I haven't checked that store for my DD8 yet but Limited 2's plus sizes were all too tight for her.

I'm getting desperate to find her fall/winter clothes. Everything is too tight and the ladies sizes are way too big. Juniors too tight. Ugh.

Our DD loves Justice over Limited Too. The Corporation TWEEN Limited who owns both Justice and Limited Too. If you go the the corporate website, they are going to start converting Limited Too stores to Justice, but sell some Limited Too cloths in the new Justice Store.

NEW ALBANY, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 2008--Tween Brands, Inc. (NYSE: TWB) today announced that it will convert approximately 560 Limited Too stores across the country to its more value-oriented Justice brand to drive growth and profitability. Both brands sell fashion basics and lifestyle items to 7-14 year old girls. Upon completion of the conversion by the end of the first quarter of 2009, the Justice chain, which has 310 stores today and has averaged double-digit comparable store sales over the last 14 quarters, will have more than 900 stores nationwide. The Company will no longer operate any Limited Too stores in the United States following the conversion, but will continue to sell Limited Too branded product at select Justice stores.

DD10 will only buy clothing from Old Navy lately. She loves their styles. I've ordered both online and the store. I do know at least on line they do have plus size for girls.

My DD7 inherited a huge trashbag full of clothes from her trendy 10 year old cousin - 80% of it is from Justice ... so I'd say Justice is pretty popular (I'd never even heard of Justice until we got that bag of clothes!). My DD loves the clothes!

OK I am really out of it. Take pity on my poor dd10.

She has no clothes from any of these stores. Her stuff all comes from Children's Place, Sears and Pennys. She is small for her age so maybe that's why. We walked into one of them (maybe Hollister?) last time we were at the mall because she knew her friends went there and they had nothing in the store small enough for her.

My kids were still into Limited Too at that age - stick to baby doll tops!

Edited to add, Limited Too is more fashionable here, probably because it's more expensive. Don't even ask me how the kids know this...
