Which is better, DVC or Christmas?

Friday afternoon before the holiday weekend and believe me, NO clients are coming in for employment services this afternoon, so can I be blamed for listening to Christmas carols and checking out the Disboards, I think not? Silly me, I just realized that I am SO much more looking forward to my DVC vacation (leaving 1/3/13) than I am to Christmas! That is just sad, don't you think? Not that I don't love my family and the holiday traditions, but most of that involves WORK for me...shopping, wrapping, cooking, cleaning...and my DVC vacation is ALL PLAY! Hurry up, January! Anybody with me?

DVC comes as many times a year as the points allow!

Why choose? We're spending christmas at OKW, staying until the new year! I know, huge crowds. But we're fine with getting up early and resting in the afternoon. Plus we decided to spend two extra days at Kidani before we go home, in order to get some rest at the resort before heading north.

I am!! We are leaving 1/3/13 too and I feel the same way you do.

I was thinking that I envy all the people I read about who are going to spend the holidays at WDW.......but not really. I don't think I could ever NOT spend Christmas with my family. I'll settle for spending quiet time away (without them ) afterward.

Christmas has changed so much, way too secular for me. I work in a public school and heaven forbid you say Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays. There's too much rushing around buying and go, go, go, that spending time at WDW sounds so much more peaceful-what a real Christmas should be.

Christmas is essentially a pagan celebration which was overtaken (for a while) by christians. That's why people of most religions - and lots of agnostics - celebrate at this time of year!

That being said this is not a reason for christmas becoming sooooo commercial. So we buy very few gifts at christmas (just small items for xmas stockings), and instead spend time with loved ones.. at WDW!!!

I agree that Christmas has become stressful and understand why you are looking forward to your trip more. I feel like it's one big obligation. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for my family and my husband's family, but it's hard trying to make everyone happy.

I remember feeling like you do about my wedding. I couldn't wait for the ceremony and reception to be over so we could be off to WDW and the Grand Floridian.

We are talking about going to WDW for Christmas next year. But the reality isn't so good because our kids will be 18 and 20 and who knows what they will be doing and if they even would want to go.

I guess I am a bit of a "Humbug". I have never liked Christmas and all the associated stress, cost, waste, sides of families, extended families, etc. It's never been a peaceful, joyous time for me. It's work. When you try to make everybody happy, usually nobody is happy.

Just because it's Christmas you don't have a holiday from your monthly bills. Add Christmas and it becomes an incredible burden for many.

Waste--Exactly!! When my kids were little, they got so much stuff (a lot of crap that you knew would break and go into the trash in a couple months), it used to make me sad.

That's not really accurate. Christmas is and has always been the celebration of Christ's birth. Now that being said, the date of Dec 25, which was chosen in the western church between the 2nd and 4th centuries, is thought to have been picked partly as a way to convert pagans celebrating the solstice. The correlation with the solestice portrayed Christ as God, much as solstice celebrations treated the sun with the same reverence. Many if the Christmas traditions celebrates grew from this correlation with the solstice and other pagan beliefs...as they converted they brought their own cultural traditions I to the mix.

I still look forward to Christmas because I love the lights, music, and the all around feel of the Holiday...I love Christmas Eve night when it is just my family having a nice dinner after Church and afterwards we make cookies and monitor to see when Santa will be in our area. I also love Christmas morning watching my kid's eyes light up with excitement because they got that one gift that they have been asking for all year long. The only time I do not like Christmastime is when I have to deal with the cranky people at the mall (I work in retail) and dealing with the crazy drivers driving this time of year .

But with that said, I get more excited for our upcoming Disney trips because, well we love to go to Disney and I am like a kid when it comes to waiting for them to come . I am especially looking forward to our upcoming trip in June because we are heading to DLR for the first time (first time for DH as well). It's funny, because I am so busy during November and December with work, the time flies during those months so when I look at my countdown ticker, I get so excited that i have 5 1/2 months left before we go rather than the 7 months when we first booked the trip. The Holidays (any holiday) that come up from now until we go helps the time go by .

I totally understand, MomB, and next year we are going to solve that problem by spending Christmas AT Disney! We will plan to arrive around the 15th and will probably leave on Christmas Eve. Kind of planning on driving right now, but if we get good airfare, we might fly at the last minute. We are planning on a GV for the 4 of us!

We spend a lot of our Christmases at Disney enjoying both the richness of Christmas and the fun at Disney - from the Christmas surprises to the Candlelight Procession! One year Epcot had a wonderful Christmas dinner from Around the World. It was fabulous! The kids even made gingerbread cookies for dessert. I never saw this meal offered again, but for that one day it made our Christmas special.

DVC at Christmas. This time last year I was at Kidani in the library. Looking out the window onto the Savannah with Cider and sugar cookies. Fire burning in the fireplace by the tree while my son was doing homework. Oh I should be there right now. I think we will be going back next Christmas.

Well said, and absolutely accurate.

We no longer allow ourselves to get caught up in the "balderal" of the commercial holiday. Instead, we view Christmas as a time for lots of family gathering and we downplay the idea of "gifts". Our gifts consist of stocking stuffer items only, and they are far more fun to shop for and receive. Our real valuable things for Christmas is the time spent together. That's what we will be doing next year when we spend Christmas at Disney with just our immediate family. No gifts are necessary other than the trip itself and the investment of "time" together.

Christmas and DVC! without DVC, we may have missed Christmas - so much going on. So we came home and let the Mouse play the part of Santa this year.

Christmas AND DVC!!! The kids are playing with their new presents - so is DH, but I'm on here already calculating our points needed for 2012 Christmas in Disney!! We did it in 2010 and LOVED it!! Even the kids who were just 6 & 10 say it was the most amazing Christmas ever b/c the spirit and fun of the holidays just kept going for a whole fantastic week. Yes, it's high point season but it was worth every single one to wake up in Disney on Christmas morning and make such wonderful memories with the kids. For 2013 my parents are also on board already and hoping we can talk some other family members in on the fun.
