Which hotel?

We're planning our family's first trip to US, and want to stay on-site. Looking at hotels alone, we like the HRH best, but are also concerned about convenience to the parks.

I've read here that all three hotels are right next to each other, and all are walking distance to the parks. But when I look at this map, it looks like quite a walk from HRH and PBH to IOA. Or is the map way out of scale? We anticipate spending more time at IOA. Would there be much advantage to staying at RPR?

Also, how are the garden view rooms at HRH? We don't spend a lot of time in our hotel room, so we don't really care much about the view, but don't want to look at a big ugly wall or anything, either. Again, looking at the map I linked, it's hard to tell if some of those garden view rooms might be looking straight at the back of a big 'ole building.

Thanks!

None of the Hotels are too far from the parks. Maybe a 10 minute walk at the most. HRH & RPH is closer to IOA than the PFB. We just take the water taxi, it's a short but relaxing ride. You can probally walk in the same amount of time, we just like saving the wear and tear on our feet.

Garden rooms at HRH may or may not have a garden view. You could request a certain room # but it is only a request. The room itself is the same as a poolview. Get a Loews First card and request an upgrade at check in. RPR rooms in general are smaller. HRH will be the closest walk to Universal and RPR is closest to IOA. In general, the walking is a pleasure to get around no matter where you are heading on property. You also have boat and shuttle options. Personally I would pick the hotel I liked best. In Universal's case you dont need to worry which one is closest to the park you will go to most. Pool hopping is allowed at all 3.

The map is a bit deceiving as far as the walk from IOA to RPR. RPR is closer to IOA but its still a bit of a walk to get to RPR because its a winding walkway( but if you notice that your boat just left for RPR walk, its a shorter time than waiting for another boat). You are walking along the waterway that the boats use. We love HRH, on our last day we always park in the big lot at the very end, its a 1 min wait to Studios, love getting to the car in mins and then be on our way home(ok actually hate that we are going home) but at least its quicker than waiting for boats or shuttles (or trams). Both RPR and HRH are great Hotels I think we prefer HRH but RPR is usually cheaper, because of this I'm not sure yet which one we are going to stay at. Its only a difference of $20 a night but that would pay for breakfast everyday plus we've already stayed at both. Decision Decisions.

I have stayed at all 3 resorts and agree that the walk to IOA and US is easy.
The paths are beautifully landscaped and ,even from Portofino, not more than 10 minutes. I also agree with taking the water taxi whenever possible. The ride is pleasant and it eliminates some walking, especially at the end of a busy day.. As for room views, request what you want ahead of time, then call the hotel and ask to speak with to the Rooms Supervisor a few days ahead of your stay to confirm your requests. I have found that they will almost always accomodate you.

Thanks everyone! We booked hotel and air for the end of September! I'm so excited  , but it's going to be a loooong wait. :(
