My DD (age 5) and I have never seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I purchased it in the store but now noticed they have another version, which is 2001 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

What is the difference?

Which would you recommend?

Is the 2001 one a rerelease of the original 1971 one with Gene Wilder?

Personally I love the original one. I cant bring myself to buy or rent the new one with Johnny Depp. Some movies should not be remade.

But if it is the original one here is a deal on it:

http://search.deepdiscountdvd.com/search?p=Q&ts=custom&w=Willy+Wonka&search.x=0&search.y=0

use code DD11 and get another 20% off. Its comes to $9.50 and shipping is free.

If you want the new movie with Johnny Depp the site has it for $15.00 after usuing the 20% off code.

I did buy the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from Walmart for 13.99. I noticed I got the widescreen version, which is not what I wanted. I checked Walmart to make sure they carried a full-version and notice a DVD called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (link below)

Now I didn't know which one to exchange it for, the full-version with Johnny Depp or the original version. Since I haven't seen either, I just wanted some opinions. Thanks for any help!!!

From your link that is the 1971 versions. I think they just "enhanced" it and re released it in 2001.

My kids love the original version (or 2001 edition) . They are with me on not seeing the new one lol.

Have seen both versions and IMO love the original...to me seemed more young kid friendly. The new one made me think of a drug induced, weirdo making candy. It was pretty good but didn't have that feel good vibe I think you should get from a "kids" movie when its over. I definitely saw why the teen crowd liked the newer version.

Original with Gene Wilder - happy go lucky feeling. Eccentric candy maker odd but happy. Oompa's added to the movie and songs were basic with a funny twist to them.

Newer version with Johnny Depp - I kept feeling like the guy should be in therapy. Kept bringing up his past as why he was weird almost like a flashback moment repeating throughout the movie and the Oompa's songs were major productions in the new version - almost a distraction. Think Chocalatier on drugs.

Again just my opinion but going on the age your looking to buy the movie for I would go with the original. My kids 3 & 4 have seen both and liked both but the original you finish the movie with more of a feel good moment.

The original with Gene Wilder has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid.

Though, to be honest I haven't seen the Johnny Depp version, but I also don't feel the need to see it either.

I have seen both, and I think that the original is way better than remake.

We now have both...and both are watched equally. The original is one of my all time favorite movies...but I absolutely love the new one too (and I am not a fan of Johnny Depp!).

Well, I am not a teen, and I have seen both. I enjoy the original, but the remake is a fun film. The candy maker Wonka - does need therapy - that is part of the joke - his dentist daddy wouldn't let him eat chocolate as a kid. Can't believe I am the only one that enjoyed it. My DH and I laughed out loud at the theater. I think it does have a feel good ending and reinforces that families are important.

For the record, I don't know that I would have let my girls see either when they were 5. Slugworth is kind of a scary character don't you think? Also in the original, you never see the other kids after their "big scenes"...not sure how to write without spoilers...

For a Tim Burton film, I thought the remake was pretty tame and not scary. It's all want you enjoy. My DH would never sit through a musical, he loved the new version.

Well...I personally think BOTH are wacko!!! But, my girls and I loved the new one and found a real sweetness buried there that was not in the original. Meaning - no spoilers - we liked the additions and thought they made the whole thing make sense sort of. Anyway, up until the new movie, we always liked the old one, and now we like both for different reasons. While the new one is "darker" it is still child-friendly in my opinion and it has a message of family love and forgiveness that I liked alot. I vote for either one...sorry I'm no help! :flower:

I love the original and will not even watch the remake. It was playing in the elevator at the Borgata and it looked strange.

Thanks for your opinions. Guess I will be exchanging it for the original version. My DD is not afraid of anything. Apparently, when she was at my parents, she watched the Halloween movie with my dad. She told me it was pretend like Halloween when they dress up scary...

For those of you that think only the remake is strange, didn't you see the scene where they ride the boat through the tunnel?! :earseek: Holy cow! If ever there was a scene where you know the writers had some drug-related inspiration... :earboy2:

I like both versions, but I have a special place in my heart for the original.
One thing that I don't understand though - why didn't anyone get mad that Grandpa Joe has been in bed, being waited on hand and foot!, for all those years but can suddenly dance around? :rolleyes1

You guys are getting me excited to see this movie now. I can't believe that I never saw it as a child. My mom must have deprived me!!!

We've seen both and like them both for different reasons. The latest version with Johnny Depp is truer to the book (a little darker than the Gene Wilder version). DD9 read the book recently and pointed out that the new one is more like the book. She saw the Gene Wilder version as a smaller child and loves the newer one now. I'd start your 5 year old with the older version and graduate to the newer one when your child is old enough to read the book.

That bugs the mess out of my husband. Every time we watch it he fusses about the fact that the mom is working her behind off and Grandpa Joe is just lying there, but can get up and dance around and go to the factory with Charlie. :rotfl:

This scene freaks me out still, and I'm 30. Alot of the original one has crazy scenes that should definatley make an impression on little ones. That being said, we rented the 71 version before seeing the remake in July, and my kids (5 and 7) both liked it and we not scared.

I was also watching some show on Bravo around Halloween, and the 71 Willy Wonka was named the #72 or so most scary movie of all time. I knew I wasn't crazy by being freaked out by it! :earsboy:
