Hi All. I am thinking about starting to get into scrapping and making frames for my Disney pins, (especially the pin frames). I would like to get a die cutter. Which one should I get? :confused3 The cricut looks really neat but so is the price. Since I am just starting, is there a less expensive one that works well and has Disney shapes? I don't want one that is difficult to cut and set up as I am not artistic and have trouble with straight lines. I am a definate newbie to this world. Thank you.

Cuttlebug....hands down. I got one not long ago and I love it! There are several Disney dies for the machine. I think I have around 15 of them.

Plus...you can get the embossing folders to make cards, which is great fun as well.

The machine is inexpensive compared to the Cricut, and it is very easy to use. My 8 year old granddaughter operates it without any problem.

Argh, I lost my reply!

If you are going to make the investment, I suggest a Big Shot. It takes the widest dies that are made, and comes with directions (and mats) on how to use all the other companies dies. And, you can cut fabric with it.

HTH,

HTH,

but no disney dies with the big shot

The Big Shot takes all the dies, whether they are made for them or not, and comes with instructions on how to use thin or thick or "original" dies, embossing folders, etc.

I have the cuttlebug and love it, it will cut all other dies except for the extra large sizzix.. I like it because it's pretty mobile. I can't speak to the big shot since I don't have one. :) good luck with your decision. :) I think you can get either machine at m's or ac moore, etc with a coupon. I used one on the cuttlebug. :)

If you have a local craft store or two look to see if they are demoing any of the machines or see if a friend has one. You'll get a lot of different opinions as we all have our own criteria’s as to what we like and don't like. Another thing you can look for is if you have and craft conventions nearby like Creaking Keepsakes as an example. At a Creating Keepsakes convention they usually have all the major vendors there that you can see and try the machines from the cricut, wizard, sizzix and cuttlebug. I've attending the CKC in Valley Forge PA the last 4-5 years and they are always there.

Each die cutting machine has their pros and cons. Most of them will take each other dies however there are some exceptions. Sizzix steel rule dies will cut up to 3 pieces of cards in one cut. It will also cut material, felt and other materials. That can be a plus if you are doing in bulk. Personally I own the original Sizzix red, a Sizzix Sidekick and a Elliston/Sizzix Big Shot. I've used a sizzix big kick, cuttlebug and wizard before but prefer the Big Shot but that's my preference. It all depends on what you want to do with it. I can tell you sizzix.com has some great Clearance items on sale right now. The prices have been that way the last 2-3 weeks. BIGZ dies originally $19.99 for $4, Sizzlit Decorative strips originally $19.99 for $4 and such. scrapbookingalley.com has good prices on spellbinder dies and okay prices on sizzix/cuttlebug. scrapyland.com has run some good sales in the past on sizzix, spellbinders and especially quickutz. Occasionally you can find good deals and sales on overstock.com, scrap-mart.com, ohmycrafts.com (pre orders can be slow but I always got what I ordered), joann.com (sign up for sales and look for free shipping coupon codes) and of course sizzix.com. I've shopped at all sites I've mentioned with no issues.

If you go the sizzix, cuttlebug or spellbinder route on the plus side you can pick up a lot of the basics if you have a Joann, ACMoore, Michaels or Hobby Lobby near using 40-50% off coupons.

Good luck with your decision. Karen

Thanks for all your advice so far. If I wanted to try the sissix sidekick to see how much I would use it before purchasing a more expensive one, does that one have any Disney dies or are there any compatible ones to go with it? Thanks.

The sidekick is good for smaller dies. The 2-in cuttlebug, sizzix sizzlets, 2-in quickutz, small 2-in cuttlebug embossing folders work well in this. I'm not aware of any disney dies fitting the sidekick. I have the smaller cuttlebug mickey head with embossing folder and it doesn't fit in the sidekick. The sizzix.com site has the pink Hello Kitty sidekick on sale for $15.99 right now but if you'd like to use the cuttlebug dies and embossing folders (they are the only ones I've seen out for die cut machines.) you might want to invest in the cuttlebug or big kick. Do you have one of the chain craft stores ACMoore, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joann's near by? Usually you can use a 40-50% off coupon on the cuttlebug or the sizzix big kick. You can use all of the common dies in both of these machines. Sizzix, Cuttlebug, Quickutz, Spellbinders. I think the cuttlebug is regularly $79.99-$89.99 and the Big Kick is regularly $99.99. You can find sticky threads out on splitcoaststampers.com with mutiple opinions and facts on the cricut, big shot, cuttlebug and Wizard.

As nicurn mentioned you cannot use the Sizzix BIGZ XL dies in the cuttlebug. You also cannot use the Sizzix Texturz embossing plates in the cuttlebug.

Here are a few prices from the online sites I tend to visit :). On the joann.com site right now is an online extra 10% off your order coupon right now but you'd have to pay shipping. Looks like the cuttlebug dies are 40% off right now too.

wow! I did NOT need to know that. :)

What is Hallmark Scrapbook? We have Michaels and Hobby Lobby so I plan to go look at their die cutters tomorrow after work or Saturday. Thanks so much for all your advice. I have copy and pasted it and will bring it along.

nicurn...maybe you didn't NEED to know that, but you WANTED to know. LOL

webprinter...I stumbled across Hallmark Scrapbook right after I got my Cuttlebug. I was looking for Disney dies and they had the best prices around...and that was BEFORE they went on sale. I have ordered 4 times from them now, and each order has been perfect and has arrived in 3 days.

If you don't mind pink I just found on the Sizzix.com website they have the pink Hello Kitty Big Shot on sale for $39.99.

http://www.sizzix.com/product/1260

Suggestions Sizzix Dies that you can incorporate into a Disney theme.

Pirate Ship $4 - http://www.sizzix.com/product/1028

Caste $4 - http://www.sizzix.com/product/1023
