We are going to Disney Dec 4th to 14th with our 3 sons (3,6 and 9). I have always dreamed of staying at the GF but I keep reading these wonderful posts about AKL and now I'm not sure...what do you suggest? Also, since my travel dates are during "value season" what are my chances of getting "an-extra-amazing-rate" for this resort ? And how do I go about finding this extra-amazing-rate??? (we are staying at Universal studio for the first 2 days b/c DH has a convention there, but after that it's off to Disney!!!!) Any imput is appreciated, I just looked at BWI and they also look amazing...is it worth it since there is 5 of us??? (so many questions...........)
Thanks
Julie

Well.... I definitely have to say AKL but that's the only deluxe we have stayed at and honestly, after staying there once, I don't think we will ever try any other deluxe. I think the chances of getting a discount are pretty good but I would not count on it. For more info on codes, check out www.mousesavers.com. Hope this helps!!!

My vote goes for the WL, it is the only place we have stayed at and most likely will be the only place. We toyed with staying at AKL this year but that thought quickly passed.

Of the Deluxe properties, I have stayed at the Contemporary and the Wilderness Lodge. I have visited all of the others with the exception of the AKL (so I cannot comment on the AKL). We're staying at the Yacht Club in December.

The answer to you question as to which is "best" really depends on your own personal taste.

Some random thoughts:
GF is the flagship property but if you are the type of person that finds the "formality" of the GF to be stuffy, it isn't for you.

I have always loved the CR; it is my favorite property though I have a feeling that will be challenged in December by the YC.

WL is very well done, a fun place to stay...but not the best, IMO.

BC and BWI look fun but I prefer the YC from what I saw when I toured the EPCOT resorts.

Good luck!

WA

My DW & I have stayed at several. We really loved BC -- it was relaxed, great theming, wonderful pool, good restaurants. But we also loved WL, which has tremendous theming. We didn't care for the Poly -- I guess we just not island-type people. AKL is absolutely wonderful!

The only one we didn't much care for is YC -- we felt it was a little "stuffy"; but other people rave about it.

If we could choose any, we'd probably have a hard time choosing between AKL, WL and BC. I'd probably go with AKL just to be close to the animals again and save like crazy to afford a savannah-view room.

You will find that there will be as many "best Deluxe" opinions as there are deluxe resorts!!! :) They all have there fans. I have stayed at GF, Polynesian, WL, YC, AKL and Dolphin. I will porbably never stay att he Contemporary because I find it bland and unexciting while others have it as their favorite. I have a hard time picking my next resort because they are all so fun. I loved the AKL very much. It was very relaxing and the decore was perfect for me. The GF was very nice but I kept feeling like it was to expensive for what you got and now with the remodel of the rooms they are a bit to frilly for me. The YC was a great place. Talk about being in the center of the action. In general people recommend one of the MK resorts if you have kids because you will be spending more time at that park and the Monorail makes it easier. I haven;t taken any kids so don't know. The YC, BC and BWI are more convienient to two parks. The BWI is probably my coice on the next trip. The AKL has bus service to all parks so it is not quite as special in that way but it makes up for it in atmosphere. Just be prepared to want to leave the parks early so you can go back to the hotel and sit on your balcony. :)

Everyone will have a different opinion on this but I will give you mine. We have stayed at the GF, WL and YC. I prefer them in that order. I like the GF best because of the location on the monorail, view of the Magic Kingdon, size of the rooms (especially the bathrooms) and beautiful lobby. The WL is a close second. Its lobby is also beautiful but the rooms and bathrooms are smaller. I also liked the boat transportation to the MK. We used a car for everywhere else. My children (ages 11,15) actually prefer the pool at the WL to those at the GF and YC. (I know everyone else will think we are crazy since Stormalong Bay at the YC is so popular.) Our room at the YC was a long walk from the lobby and was very damp. We could never figure out what was wrong but the whole room just felt damp. We were on the second or third floor in a wing facing toward Epcot. The pool was just too crowded to enjoy and the water in the circulating part was too deep to use without an inner tube. When we tried to move around in the water, we ran into a volley ball game blocking the entire width of the pool. This was awkward because you had to climb out , walk around them and get back in without benefit of any stairs.

This is just my opinion. I'm sure many others have had different experiences that will influence their recommendations.

The thing that stood out in your post was three children. I would definitely consider a monorail rseort. We have done WL and CR with children. The difference in the monorail is amazing! If the MK is your favorite stop you can even walk from the CR! Convenience is a plus for us! ;)

That's like asking 'what's the best ride at Disney World?' Lots of differing opinions. I've stayed at GF, Poly, BC, Swan and Dolphin. Here's my .02 worth: GF: Beautiful, less casual than the others, monorail. Poly: Fun, especially if you're into the Tropical Resort theming, monorail. BC: Fun, boats to Epcot/MGM, great pool. Swan/Dolphin: Best chance of getting a discount. Boats to Epcot/MGM. Swan recently refurbished.

Definately the Yacht Club!!! Service fantastic, pool fabulous, easy walk to Epcot, MGM and Boardwalk. Only down side is you have to look at the Bird and Fish Hotels. Didn't like AKL, not worth the money, too dark. As you can see everyone has different opinions!!!

Now I'm sure you're even more confused. But it looks like posters also gave you some good info about some of the resorts. Because they are in the deluxe category, all these resorts have their distinctive charm. Everyone has their personal favorite. You cannot go wrong with any of them. Pick the one that most suits your needs and your style.

Good luck:D

For your question, asking between GF and AKL, I would go with GF with your kids - the monorail is just too convenient. At the age they are, they will probably want to spend most of the time at MK, although I would suggest going to Epcot a couple of times for the World Showcase showing of different ways to celebrate Christmas (one that was very informational and fun was the story of Hanukah at the American Pavilian). Just my thoughts.

I would not worry about the Discounts ... if codes come out for one Disney property they usually do for all.

If I had to choose between GF or AKL and $$ was no object I would choose GF.

Here are my thoughts on each of the Deluxes. I'm sure they conflict with others! That is why Disney is so great. Something for everyone!

GF - Elegant. I would have to say a little stuffy. BUT -- I would like to stay here someday. It's usually the most expensive.

YC - Elegant as well, but more relaxed than the WL since it is a sea side theme. We love the pool and Beaches and Cream. Great location to visit MGM and Epcot. Very pretty at night that whole area. Nice standard views.

BC - Attached to YC ... less elegant more "beachy" ... we'd like to stay here someday just to try it. Not all rooms have balconies and that is why we have not yet. Balcony is important for us.

Poly - Have stayed here. We liked it OK. Loved the atmosphere, not to crazy on the decor of the place (70's brown and oarnge .. reminded me of the Brady Bunch Hawaii episode :p They are renovating though so who knows?) We liked having the monorail right there. Nice pool, cool to have the beach and be able to watch the water parade. Nice tropical feel.

BW - This is one I have never visited. Pool area clown scared my kids when they saw it from the boat ... (LOL I"M KIDDING!)

S & D - Never visited this one ... looks OK but not Disney owned and if I'm gonna stay Disney I want to stay Disney. Lacks the theming of the other resorts.

WL - While it's not my fav. resort ... we like it because of the price and the fact that it's a Deluxe / close to MK and has wonderful themeing. The rooms could be a little larger. The whole resort is really awesome though from the lobby to the landscaping.

AKL - Reminded me of WL but with African flair. We would only stay here if we got a savannah room and probably not for the whole trip since it's kind of far away from everything but AK. Lots of people love this resort.

CR - I would stay here in tower because I think that is cool. I think this does not have that great of theming BUT it does have large rooms and is cool with the monorail and all ... very convienient for MK and Epcot. I'm not sure about garden wing (unless we got a great deal) just because we would want the tower experience.)

My opinions being said. .. they are just that. Everyone likes different things! I don't think there are any "Bad" resorts on property .. just one may be your cup of tea and not someone elses.

Do you want beachy? Elegant? Woodsy?

I would also decide what park you plan on spending the most time in and stay in one close.

Happy Deciding!

Like Walt's Asst. mentioned, it's a matter of taste and what's important to you (cost, room size, etc.). One thing that's been overlooked is that not all deluxe resorts will allow 5 people in a normal room. So unless you want to spring for an second room or get a Junoir Suite or Villa, then that knocks out WL and AKL (I believe).

As for the remaining:

GF: Beatiful, and the most expensive. We've not stayed there, but we've toured the grounds and lobby. It's just not our style. It feels like you're at your great aunt's house and you have to worry about the kids breaking something.

CR: The tower would be cool, but otherwise the themeing just isn't there. Overall, It just feels too sterile.

Poly: Nice place. Nice themeing. The kids loved the volcano pool.

S&D: The rooms fit 5, but there's no day bed. The themeing is OK, and it still "feels" like Disney. The location is awesome. You can also catch some great discounts here on occasion.

BC&YC: Very nice themeing, but it too has a little bit of that "great aunt" feeling to it. SAB is by far the best pool on-site. The location is awesome with Epcot, Boardwalk, and MGM within walking distance.

Just remember, these aren't "right" or "wrong" answers, just opinions.

We stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge last year, my kids are 9 and 11 and they LOVED it. We had a savanah view room and used the balcony a lot. It has great decor, great staff (very friendly and helpful). The pool is spacious with a slide and was never really busy when we were there. The bus system was very efficient when we were there and the bus stop is well located.
You never tire of looking at the animals whether it is from your balcony or Arusha Rock and the fire pit. We loved coming home each day from the parks as the lobby was something to behold (although a bit dark) at night it was fabulous. AKL has great restaurants from inexpensive to the very chic. In our opinion it is better than the GF which was very stuffy and way over priced.

Well, I'm not an expert or anything, and it's true that there are many different opinions out there. That being said, I agree mostly with wdwobsessed, except that I stayed with my family at the GF and we didn't find it stuffy at all! There were lots of kids, like at all the other deluxes, and they were all having fun. I had a good giggle at Geoff's comment - lots of people feel this way, but I don't know why. If you prefer a very relaxed atmosphere, like beachy or tropical, then it may not be for you. It certainly didn't feel too formal for us. We were all relaxed and pampered and had a terrific time. :D So good that we're going back there in November!! :Pinkbounc

We also loved the YC when we stayed there. The WL looks beautiful, but it just looks too dark for my tastes. AKL seems too far away from most things, although many swear by it and it's transportation. BC is beautiful too, but too "beachy" for me. The Poly is next on our list - hopefully the renovations will update the Brady Bunch look (LOL - I always say that about the Poly - I guess I'm not alone in my thinking!). CR is too dated for me also, but I know many love it. Thankfully, there's a resort in WDW to satisfy everyone, it just makes deciding a little difficult sometimes. But what a great decision to have to make! ;)

Have fun planning!

The Asian.

Oh, you mean resorts that were built;).

I've now stayed at all of the deluxe hotels, and of them all, my favorite is the Contemporary Tower. It has the largest rooms on property and each one features a balcony. They are spacious enough for 5 adults with two queen beds and an adult size day bed. They feature large balconies with either stunning lake views with nightly views of the EWP, illuminations and PI fireworks or the MK and weekend FIS fireworks. The bathrooms are huge with a sink and tub in one room and a separate water closet with vanity. The tower rooms look out onto a large atrium with, the crown jewel IMHO, the monorail gliding through.
On one side of the concourse you'll find several shops that feature men's and women's apparel, as well as jewelry and character merchandise and sundries. Opposite the shops on the concourse are two very different, but equally appealing restaurants in their own way. Chef Mickey's is low on quality as far as food goes, but high on fun with the best character interaction of any character meal at WDW. The Concourse Steakhouse is a little gem (one that you could once call a hidden gem, but alas, has since been discovered) that serves good steaks at a much better price than all of the other steak house at WDW. The Outer Rim cocktail lounge would be a great spot for a drink with good lake views, but it is too noisy and gets crowded from people waiting to go to Chef Mickey's. That's o.k. though because the best lounge at WDW is found a few floors up at the top of the hotel in the California Grill Lounge. This lounge boasts beautiful views of the MK and FITS fireworks. And it also serves some of the sushi that is featured next door in the California Grill restaurant.
This restaurant has won numerous awards, including one for best restaurant in central Florida. The view is topped only by the food. It is casual contemporary cuisine. It is expensive, but IMHO, worth the price of admission. I think this place is better than Victoria and Albert's, better than Wolfgang Puck's and way better than Emeril's.
The Contemporary also features some of the best recreational options at WDW. We all know about the 10 minute walk to the MK and all of the activities there, and Epcot is only a monorail transfer away, but apart from the theme parks there is a plethora of activities as well. Immediately at the resort are two pools and two hot tubs. The large, free-form theme pool has a large (maybe too intense for very small children) and fun water slide, a children’s wading pool and spraying fountains. The round adult pool is directly on the lake and gets deeper toward the center of the pool. It is right next to the beach and the beach volleyball court. Across the way is the marina. The Contemporary has the most extensive marina on WDW property. You can rent, of course, water mice, pontoons and canopy boats, or you can use Sammy Duval’s Water Sports to go on a Skiing or Parasailing trip. Back on shore is the Tennis Club, which boasts lighted clay Tennis Courts, a pro shop with tennis pros who offer lessons and rental services for rackets. Inside the ground floor of the Contemporary is the Food and Fun center which offers a snack bar and refillable mugs for the adults and a large arcade for the…kids. Yeah, the kids…
Only a short Wonka boat ride away is Fort Wilderness. From here you can catch a dinner show, participate in a sing-a-long, watch a free nightly Disney movie, rent a golf cart or bicycle, rent a paddle boat or canoe, ride horse, visit a petting zoo or catch a nightly hay ride. There is no place at WDW more convenient to Fort Wilderness than the Contemporary Resort.
If you’d prefer something more upscale or tropical, the Polynesian and Grand Floridian are just a couple of Monorail stops away. At the Poly, you can catch another dinner show. At the Grand Floridian, you can sip afternoon tea and listen to a band play in the main building. Get a massage from the spa and spend learn what it reallymeans to vacation. Then each day you can return home to Walt’s flagship resort.
If you can swing it, stay in the premier concierge level at WDW on the 14th floor of the Contemporary. The lounge has a great view of the MK, and has the best food of any lounge I’ve experienced (it all comes from the California Grill). The rooms are large with oversized balconies. The rooms on the concierge level have a more subdued décor, and the whole floor just feels more elegant. The Concierge staff is there to serve, and they do an excellent job. Both before and during your stay, the staff does everything to make your stay as magical as it should be.
O.k., maybe it’s apparent that I’m a bit of a fan of this place. But honestly, I think the admiration I have for this resort is well deserved. The Poly, my second favorite, certainly has her charms. The Beauty of the Grand Floridian is unsurpassed. It’s hard to beat staying on the Boardwalk, though staying across from it, with a great pool, a marina and a beautiful panorama comes pretty close. And a stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (though truly, a name like that must have been given by the unimagineer of the year) truly transports you. But for me, nothing says Disney like gliding into the atrium of the Contemporary Resort after a long day at the parks. I love hearing Mickey welcome me to my floor, and the hustle and bustle of the Grand Canyon Concourse in the morning as I step outside my room. I like looking at the now abandoned remnants of a southwestern theme in the tile mosaic, and looking for the five-legged goat. I love the approach via motor launch at night from Fort Wilderness. Nothing is more Disney to me than this hotel. It is the Flagship that he envisioned, and its still the WDW flagship in my mind.

There were lots of kids, like at all the other deluxes, and they were all having fun. I had a good giggle at Geoff's comment - lots of people feel this way, but I don't know why.
Glad you had a giggle. I realize that the fear is probably unfounded, but you've never seen our 4 year old in action. One of my nicknames for him is Max... as in "Maximum Destruction". He has the uncanny ability to quckly scan a room and go right for the item that has the highest combination of cost and fragility!

Demosthenes, you'll get a kick out of this one! My wife and I were eating at the California Grill this month (excellent, BTW), and I wife observed "This is just like Chief Mickey's for adults!" I had to laugh and agree.

Only down side is you have to look at the Bird and Fish Hotels
Not a very constructive thing to say. Some of us enjoy staying at the Swan and Dolphin, and greatly admire these Michael Graves designed Hotels.

Geoff --- I have to laugh at your Max comment. We should NEVER plan a trip to the world at the same time. Between your 4 yr old Maximum Desctruction and my "Tyler the Tornado" ... not much of WDW may be left standing!!
