I am looking for a credit card that gives cash back or a free plane tickets or some kind of discounts.

I have the alaskan airlines card and you get points and put towards a plane ticket. Is there any other CANADIAN credit cards that do these things, or are they just american credit cards.

I have been wondering the smae thing.

Although not a Canadian card, but Canadians can have one, we have the American Express and earn Airmiles, we also have a BMO (Mosaik) Mastercard that we can also earn airmiles on too. It can take a lot to earn airmiles - unless you shop at Safeway - they give out lots.

Would love a Disney Visa, but no!

I heard CIBC has a good cash back card that has no annual fee, but I haven't loooked in to it yet.

I have a Diner's Club MasterCard which lets you earn 1 point/$1. You can trade in your points for flights on any airline. And you are pretty much guaranteed a seat on the flight as long as the flight has room. That was a really nice change from Aeroplan.

For my September flight to Orlando, it cost me 30,000 points... at that level you can book a long haul flight anywhere in North America up to a value of $800. The only cost you are responsible for are the taxes and you can use points (if you have any left) to cover that cost.

They also had other merchandise available but they didn't seem to be as good a deal as the flights.

Ours is similar to yours. We have a First Calgary Platinum Mastercard (Credit Union) which is 1 point/1 dollar. You can use the points for anything. On our trip to DL in November were able to cover the cost of our six day park hopper passes for our family of five with our points and still have leftovers.

We use Mosaik ( Westjet Gold) and Amex Airmiles as backup. You can fly anywhere Westjet flies for no more than 1600 airmiles. You earn 1 a/m for every $15.00 with Mosaik Gold and 1 a/m for every $20.00 on Amex. It takes us about 2 years to collect 7,000 a/m ( enough for 5 to fly anywhere west flies) It costs about 135000 aeroplan miles to fly 5 to orlando. The main difference is you pay more taxes for airmiles then you do for airmiles pgm. Aeroplan you pay about 100.00 for all 5 vs about 600-700 for airmiles. confused yet.?

Bottom line it may take you longer to collect aeroplan miles, but it will cost you less to redeem.
We use airmiles as I am not convinced I can save enough to fly 5 in a shorted period of time....

TD offers the Gold Elite card which is a cashback card and they also have the TD Gold travel card earns you points to use for car rentals flights on any airline hotel stays park tickets train tickets cruises etc. They also have the American Airlines reward miles card for point towards American airlines flights.

The Bmo is great regarding the 1600 airmiles to fly anywhere in North America where West Jet flies. The cost is $70.00 a year . Also for around $75.00 you can buy a trip cancellation policy (with other insurance benefits) which saves you a fortune when it comes to buying any type of cancellation insurance. This covers the whole family.

I have the CIBC cash back VISA. It accumulates half a percent of your net purchases (ie. $5/$1000). Every December, the total amount is then credited back onto your credit card. The nice thing is that there is no annual fee. No big rewards, but better than nothing.

I prefer to use my Amex Airmiles. It gives me 1 airmile for $20 purchased. It also has no annual fee. You can get a better Amex Airmiles (1 point for $10) but there is a fee for that one.

Hey, I have the RBC Avion card. Would I pay more in airline tix taxes with Avion over something like Aerogold? Anyone know?

One of the reasons why I don't use Airmiles to book tix anymore is that the taxes are just insane.

I agree with OntFamily regarding the Starwood Preferred Guest card. Redflagdeals did a comparison of the different Canadian "rewards" cards and this was their best bang-for-your-buck card.

Redemption rates on Starwood hotels is excellent (Swan/Dolphin included) and points accumulate at 1 point per $2 spent with substantial annual bonuses available.

Great topic and I have posted on a flyer website on this subject as well.

It is not always about what card will provide the greatest rewards, but in which PROGRAM you can maximize your earnings. I strongly suggest to many i speak with, Champion ONE program that will be the best fit with your spending and travel, including partners and bonuses... and consolidate everything you do to that program.

I have personally chosen Aeroplan. I can consolidate all of my earnings to the Aeroplan program from Credit Card expenses to air travel, to hotels, to car rentals, and they offer 1.5 Miles/$ for purchases on Gas, Grocery, and Pharmacy. So fill up at Esso and you are earning 5.5 miles per $3 spent (1.5/$1 plus Esso partner at 1/$3)

It makes absolutley no sense to collect miles or points into different programs. You will end up with a few here and a few there, never enough to do anything with!

I do however suggest a back-up Points/Milage account. The one that made sense to us was the Alsaska Milage PLan program. MP covers every other airline (from both One World and Sky Team) that the Air canada (Star Alliance) does not cover. This has proven success with personal and business travel. Other then unaffiliated LCC, you never really have to worky what airline you fly, just go for the most economical affiliate.

So study your spending, the Air Alliance you can most commonly fly, focus on program partners, and keep an eye out for bonuses. We earn around 80,000-100,000 Aeroplan miles per year on about $36,000 in spending on a Credit card by utilizing partners and air travel.

Also, when booking air reward travel with a FF program, if the price is right, do not be affraid to pay for the seat of the primary account holder. You will then earn reward miles INSTEAD of using them. I always cover the cost of my family utilizing rewards and pay for my own.

An example is as follows:

4 of flying to YYZ-MCO. Total Aeroplan miles = 100,000
Aerplan Miles remaining in after trip account = 0

VS

4 YYZ or BUF-MCO, with 3 on reward seats and 1 Paid = 75,000
Aeroplan miles remaining in account = 25,000
Aerplan Miles earned on trip to MCO= Est. 2,000
Total Aerplan Miles in Account after trip = Est. 27,000
Total cost of having additional 27,000 miles = Est. $170-400

Now, you already have enough for 1+ sests of your next trip and you only need to earn 48K more miles.

I hope this helps and makes sense.
