Which conspiracy theories do you believe?

It's too complicated to explain to you but a researcher employed by a hospital cannot patent his work. The employer "owns" the research via the researchers sell the rights to their inventions by a legal assignment for $1.00. It's not about preventing cures, more about making money. Researchers at most big hospitals are researching drugs not cures.

LOL Thanks for calling me shady.

I'm actually pretty familiar with research and patent laws from my own technical research work, so give it a try. I just might be able to handle your "too complicated" explanation.

And yes, my company would own the patent to the work that I did on their dime. I'm pretty sure that's true at nearly every company in the country. It doesn't mean that I would sit idly by while they silently let a life saving cure that I discovered just wither on the vine.

And right - a for-profit pharmaceutical companies main objective is, in fact, to make money. If that's the conspiracy you're trying to sell us, then it's not a conspiracy, it's just fact. Which again, as I said above, is why federal funding of basic science research is so critical. For-profit companies need to focus on applied research with a likely payoff in the next few years (usually within a decade), and that's often treatment rather than a cure. That's a FAR different statement than saying they don't want to find a cure or suggesting that they will actually hide a cure or not patent one if found.

Thanks for calling us stupid :)

For the record - I spent years working in genomics and genetic epidemiology. Explaining intellectual copyrights and patent laws (at the basic level) shouldn't be that hard for you if it is something that you do.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the poster isn't going to explain anything. Keeping us "in the dark" just makes them right about the conspiracy. You know, if it can be proven wrong then they really have nothing to believe anymore.

Fair point. It wouldn't be a conspiracy if the facts were actually laid out for discussion and understanding.

Thanks for the major twisting of my words. I wasn't talking to you, only replying to one person's analogy. It's not just about explaining patent laws.

Using that "theory", Salk would NEVER have made polio vaccines available. Think of the $$$ in artificial lungs! And, what about penicillin? Why would we EVER have brought that to market? Sure people would have died, but THINK of all the $$$$ that could have been made on them in ICUs in hospitals! And, how about insulin? Why would we have made that one available? There's so much money in disease!

Good grief. The mind boggles at what people are willing to believe. But, there is LOTS of evidence that people prefer to believe lies they are told rather than facts.

I rhink justice Scalias death is suspicious .
For me, it would be:

-Marilyn Monroe's death was a murder by the CIA or FBI.
-JFK''s shooting was orchestrated by the CIA
-September 11th.....there are SO many theories, I"m not sure which one is right, but I believe there was ALOT more going on than what was revealed to the public
hink

Of course it isn't. It's about not being able to back up your claim.

And how did I twist your words? If you understand something and claim that it is "too complicated" to explain to someone else, you are saying that they aren't as smart as you.

The polio vaccine and penicillin and insulin were invented many, many years ago. Take a deep breath.

I'm a firm believer in "three can keep a secret if two of them are dead."
Not a chance do I believe in any conspiracy that requires many multiple people to be complicit in keeping the secret.
In my experience, people are very poor secret keepers. In fact, most people LOVE sharing secrets...

Then more recently there wouldn't be pharma companies actively working on cures and vaccines for Zika and Ebola. Pharma would make a killing on vaccines for both of those so there is no reason they would need to not make them. New cancer drugs and treatments are coming out what feels like quarterly (or more thanks to genetics based medicine). The only thing that was really laxed recently was antibiotic drugs and really the only reason they backed off that was because we had found so many we thought we had the "cure" no one seriously thought we were going to abuse them to the point of drug resistance so we as a culture created our own problems.

So this greed thing is new? LOL.

You know what's new? Stupidity. Used to be people believed in science and facts. Now, we believe in conspiracy theories.

SMH

Oh my nerves. Is this a "I believe in science" thing now? Twisty twisty words.

You must believe that no government politician has ever had anything to hide too if you don't believe in conspiracies.

There are over 10,000 known diseases. I'm pretty sure a cure for some of them will not keep any big pharma companies from making money.
In fact, I'd say that finding cures, in terms of treatment or prevention means there will always be a revenue stream. You can either have vaccines for people to avoid diseases, or medication to treat them. Either way that is money in their pockets.
But what do I know, that is pretty simple thinking, I'm sure its really just too complicated for me to understand.
