Which Camera Should I Purchase?

I'm clueless about cameras & thought this would be the place for educated opinions. :) I want to purchase my DS(16) a camera for Christmas, so I don't have to worry that he'll destroy mine. :sad2: He's also getting a replacement Ipod & a laptop, so I want to get the cheapest one possible that is decent & contains the features he'll use. (He didn't actually ask for the camera.) Anyway, I'm thinking he'd like a digital camera that can also be used sort of like a camcorder. Will this be outrageously expensive? Should I just get him a 60 min. digital camcorder instead? I want to start looking for deals & want to know what I'm looking for. ;) Thanks in advance for your advice. It will be very much appreciated. :flower3:

You said that you want to get a camera that has the features he'll use; could you be more specific about which features those are?

A lot of digital point and shoot cameras have a movie function, although the amount of time they'll record is limited by the size of the memory card.

Also, I know you don't want to spend a lot, but since for many people price is relative, could you give us a price range to work with? Thanks :)

Thanks for the quick reply. :cool1: He's not the most responsible 16 yr. old on the planet. :sad2: He's on his 3rd cell phone, if that tells you anything. He'll want to be able to take pics & record video to share online. That's pretty much it. I really don't know where to start as for as pricing goes. I don't know how much they are. Basically, I want to get the cheapest digital camera, w/ movie function, available. As long as it takes clear pics, he'll be fine with it. For him, it will be a toy.

I have a Nikon Coolpix s210 that does everything he would need. You can get it for $150 right now shipped with a 2 gb memory card at Buydig.com. http://www.buydig.com/shop/product....dium=cpc&utm_campaign=NKCPS210K&sku=NKCPS210K

However, there are cameras out there that are even less expensive that would fulfill your needs. know that Kodak and Samsung have cameras out that are under $100 and have a movie mode, although I don't know what the limitations are.

You might try going to your local Target and playing around with some of the cameras there, I know they have a couple p& s under $100, as well.

I wish I could be more help! Good luck!

See what kind of deal there is to be had on a Samsung

The S860 is a nice digital camera as is the L100.

You will get more camera for your buck with Samsung as they are not a 'name' like Nikon. Dont worry tho' they make cameras for Pentax. In fact the current award winning Pentax SLRs are built by Samsung using a Samsung sensor and chipset.

I use a high end Samsung digital SLR with class topping 14.6 meg sensor and this cost me similar money to a hobby spec Nikon or Canon

The Fuji Finepix range is also a good value range and punches way above its weight.

I have a Canon p&s- A560 that does what you are looking for- does a good job too(and I'm partial to Nikon). A friend of mine just bought this years update of it- the A590IS for $130.

Thanks for the additional suggestions. :) I haven't bought one yet. I'm waiting to see how much a computer is going to cost us 1st.
