I'm looking to spend no more than $1000. I have an slr from 2005. I can't figure if I should get a low end slr or a high end p & s.

I'm not into changing lens or adjusting settings on a regular basis. I want a camera that takes really good pictures. I like the rapid fire shooting of the slr. I would also like decent video so I don't have to carry a videocamera. I'm little, so lightweight would also be a plus.

I've been talking up my new canon eos m lately. It has a dslr sensor. It has the guts of a rebel T4i.

The model got off to a really rocky start owing to a really crappy autofocus performance. If you look at reviews from 9months ago or so they pan it on that basis. They released a new firmware and the AF performance is now pretty good. Result is you can get a new 2012 model camera kit for about $300.

You mention shooting video. Canon has a reputation for being very good at this. something to consider anyway.

Nikon D7000 with 18-105 kit lens. Great low light performance, HD video. Priced a little under $1000, available with no tax or shipping from several sites. If you decide in the future to use more lenses, lots of lenses from which to choose.

What are you unhappy about with your current camera? Knowing that could help in finding the right camera to get now.

Maybe I just don't know how to use it, but most of the time it will flash 8 - 10 times before taking a pic. And its pretty big and heavy. Plus its only 6 megapixels.

6 megapixels is small by today's standards. It's more than enough to make nice 11x14 prints but it doesn't leave you any room to crop so I can see wanting a little bit more there. Just know that more MP is not going to improve your image quality.

On the flashing 8 to 10 times... this sounds like the auto focus assist. Is it flashing a lot like a disco strobe?

Yes.

I too am looking into getting a new camera & until I read this I hadn't really thought about the weight. May I ask how little you are and if you've had a problem with any cameras in the past? I'm not big either so now I'm kind of concerned.

I'm 4 ft 10 in and weigh 90 lbs. After a while my dslr starts to hurt my shoulders. I should also mention I have rheumatoid arthritis so that doesnt help either.

On the size and weight issue -- It comes down to whether you intend to carry the camera for long periods, whether it's a strong preference that it can fit in a pocket versus small bag versus around the neck/large bag. And as to weight particularly, a bigger camera lens combo can wear some people down if carried for an extended period. On the other hand, if you are mostly using the camera around the home, size and weight are much smaller issues. But if you're walking 12 hours per day with your whole camera kit, size can be a huge issue.

For up to $1000, you have lots of options.
The high end compacts -- like the Rx100, are outstanding. Image quality very very close to a typical dSLR (in some cases better), yet it fits in your pocket.

Then there are "mirrorless " cameras -- the Nikon 1 is small with amazing autofocus speed ( compared to other non-dslrs. The micro4/3rds cameras have lots of great lens options. High image quality, all in a much lighter and smaller form. (Not quite pocket, but much smaller than dSLR ). The Sony NEX system uses the same sensor type/size as most dslrs -- so outstanding image quality, yet small and light.

In the dSLR world-- you can get entry level or even mid level, and perhaps a couple upgraded lenses.

Remember... DSLR and mirrorless cameras -- to get the most out of them, you end up adding lenses over time. Many people do stick with just the kit lens, but then the camera is not living up to its potential.
In terms of which dSLR -- Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony ( which is dslt technically) all make excellent cameras with slightly different strengths and weaknesses. But it's hard to g wrong.

First figure out which type of camera you want, based on ergonomics, shooting style, etc.
Then worry about picking which model.

Canon eos m vs rx100? They were both originally $600-$700 but the canon is $300-400. Is the rx100 much better? Enough to justify the extra $$$ ?

Well I'm 5 ft & 115 so hopefully I'll be ok :rotfl2: if not, I guess DH will become the new official trip photographer. Thanks

The RX100 has always meant paying a premium for portability. If you do not mind the bulk of external lenses, AND will buy upgraded lens(es), than a mirrorless or DSLr can get you better image quality...but they wont fit in your pocket.
(There's a decent argument that the RX100's Zeiss lens is often better than a kit lens, and the f/1.8 helps on the wide end, too.

The price of the Rx100 has remained higher.. because the market has deemed it more worthy of the price.

The Canon EOS M has not been a very successful product -- not to say it is a bad product.

With the RX100 -- You are partially paying more of a premium for the extremely compact body. You won't find any camera of that size with similar functionality and quality.

I haven't used the Canon EOS M. I know the reviews have been mixed, particularly with questions about its auto-focus system.

And to the extent a camera is defined by it's lens... the RX100 may outperform the Canon EOS M when using a regular kit lens.

All that said, in most shooting situations... I would expect both cameras to perform pretty similarly.

If you can get your hands on both cameras and feel them out, I'd recommend it.

What lens would you recommend for the eos m?
The system was only released with two native lens options.

I got mine with the kit lens, an 18-55mm with the image stabilization and it's a very good lens. The other is a 22mm F2 pancake style prime lens that is extremely compact and most reviews are positive.

A third lens was released recently to the Japanese market that is an 11-22mm with Image Stabilization and I suspect you could get a grey market of this on ebay.

There is also a lens adapter to let you mount the EF and EF-S series lenses but I haven't gone there yet.

I did get a C-Mount adapter that lets me play with some old 16mm movie camera lenses.

I do rather wish they had something with a little more reach in the native lens mount.

I've seen it for sale with the 18-55 only and with the 22 only. Is the 18-55 the one to go with? If so, why?

The Sony is a great camera. It's an incredible performer. If I had the money, to fill the need of a more compact walking around/low light camera I probably would have went with the rx100.

That said, the canon is cheap because they took such a hit to their rep coming out with a really horrible AF problem. Nearly every review said the same thing, great pictures, great video, a little too small in the hand, and crap AF performance.

Things on which I think I came out ahead, going with the EOS M: For the same price I get the same focal length kit lens and a very good compact prime lens and the ability to expand the capabilities of the camera if I wish it later. I get a sensor 4X the size of the RX100, practically this translates to some really impressive low-light. 12,800iso is native and looks pretty good, it can be boosted to 25,600. I have slight hands, and the layout of the EOS M works well for me.

Definately try to get them both in your hands and take some shots before dropping some $$.

I think that's mostly personal preference. Most camera users prefer having some zoom (ie, the 18-55) but some others like shooting with just a fixed prime lens if it means a faster lens and/or more compact package.
