Which airport from NY?

I am also worried about a scheduled landing too close to the airport closing and being diverted to LAX anyways. Does that happen often? I don't think introducing a connection to get the SNA is worth it?

I don't think this would happen...if the flight is a non-stop they would know before departure if it was delayed enough to not make it before 11pm and would likely cancel it, not divert to LAX.

Just coming back to this thread after a little while with an update. The price difference gap has lessened a bit, as the LAX flights went up and the SNA flight went down a bit. Total gap is SNA is about $300 more now. The biggest problem is that the flight schedule for only SNA flight available to us changed to arrive at 9:45pm. Now my choice is a flight that lands at LAX at 7:30pm vs. SNA at 9:45pm. We are not checking bags and will be getting an Uber or car service. Now that the time difference is more than 2 hours, I am leaning towards LAX.

Given the volatility of the airlines right now, I'd go with LAX just because there are more options if something gets canceled/delayed. I made the choice of a smaller airport recently and ended up with huge regrets. I will spare you the gory details, but my easy flight from Long Beach ended up getting canceled (after boarding), I had to taxi to SNA, fly to Dallas, where my alternative connection ended up getting canceled, spend the night in the airport, fly to Houston, then to Salt Lake City. My husband had to make an 8 hour roundtrip drive to SLC to pick me up, because they couldn't get me into the regional airport I had originally flown out of. It was a 36 hour nightmare (with my 13 yr old daughter in tow), that I never want to repeat.

thanks, I had thought it was 10pm, did not realize it was 11pm. That is better.

good point. certainly something to take into consideration.

Many thanks!

My preference is always SNA, but since a late arrival is an issue, LAX sounds like a better fit for you this time.
