Which air freshener works best?

We will be going on the Magic in August. We will be in an inside state room (oh how I will miss the fresh air from the verandah!). I will try to put this as delicately as possible - I will be with my husband and 18 yr. old son in an inside stateroom with a one room bathroom (it is not split like most staterooms). Most air fresheners that work best must be plugged in. From what I understand there is no regular outlet in the bathroom. Please - I need all the help I can get.

I used one of those air fresheners that you have for the car. It was easy to just loop it around the bar in the corner. That way you can open the packet as much as you like. And then keep it closed when needed.

We either bring a "stick up" or the glade secrets, they are just tiny ones that I keep on the counter. A spray may be the most effective though.

I recently discovered Oust Air Neutralizer. It works so well compared to other air "fresheners". I don't want to sound like a commercial, but it "kills 99.9% of odor-causing bacteria". It comes in 3 fragrances. I like the citrus scent the best. At Wal-Mart it is not found by the air fresheners. It is located near the Lysol and other bathroom cleaners. They also make a small dispenser you can attach to the wall and push 2 times when needed. I highly recommend this product. Sorry if I sound like I work for the company...I don't!

We went to the local Target in Cape Canaveral and found a small bottle called "Citrus Magic." Smelled great, was again small (not huge like the other cans, say 5" in height, 1 1/2" in diameter). Claimed to be more "organic" but still had the aerosol in it. I liked its smell and small size! Hope to be able to find it at home for future trips!

OK - I have the perfect stuff - It is from Bath & Body Works -

It comes in a travel size - It's concentrated - so only need 1 spray - My friend introduced me to it and I now always have one in my travel bag -

there are different scents - Comes in little silver bottles - they are about $5 - They are usually located in the back of the store -

They are perfect for travel - Although we do use them at home as well -

The absolute best air fresheners I have ever tried are made by Gold Canyon Candle Company. (No, I don't work for them)
I know we can't have candles on the ship, but they have air freshener sprays that are THE best, and they have travel-ready hanging fresheners (almost like the ones you'd hang in your car)

The sprays are excellent without being over powering, and their candles are the only candles that truly do smell great as they're burning. You know how the candle smells good if you sniff it, but doesn't smell at all while it burns? Theirs really do smell great!

Interesting Thread ... LOL .... the sweet/flowery smelling air fresheners give me an instant headache (so does cheap perfume). We found travel size Ozium - does the job and doesn't leave a lingering flowerly sweet smell.

Glade used to make a small countertop airfreshener that you just pushed down to spray. That's what I packed for our last cruise (2001). I can't find them anymore, but they do make something called Press 'n Fresh that seems similar. You're supposed to mount the dispenser on the wall though. Has anyone tried this product without sticking it to the wall?

This sounds like a good option. I really hope everyone keeps in mind that you are, essentially, borrowing this space for a few days. Please, please don't use something which the next occupants may find offensive.

There was an earlier thread and people discussed spraying the life vests with various items to maybe disinfect them. Many of us have problems with smells that cause headaches or other problems. While a spray may not bother you, or you may think that it smells wonderful, it may make another person really sick. Strapping on a life jacket which someone has doused with Lysol would make me very sick. I would must rather take my chances with a vest which others may have briefly worn.

If you need something to help with odors in the air, perhaps try to use an odor neutralizer, rather than something strong to supposedly mask the bad smell. The people who will stay in that stateroom in the future will thank you!

Most of these suggestions for air fresheners only last a couple hours, at the most. It seems hard to believe that it could linger so long that it would bother the next family who stays in your stateroom.

If the delicate problem you refer to is what I think it is...keep in mind that there are bathrooms on the ship that can be used as well (Rt. 66 has some)... they can always use those bathrooms if they have to...

But the same could be argued for perfume, that it's (in theory) applied to the person wearing it and shouldn't bother anyone who's not in the same room with the person. And yet I can walk into a room (especially an elevator) and NOW that someone with perfume was in that room earlier.

I get migraines and have allergies, my mother has allergies and asthma. For me I just get stuffy and usually a mild headache, for my mother it can cause great difficulty in her breathing. She'll react to things that I can't even smell, especially air fresheners. If I spray an air freshener in a room and she walks into it 4 or 5 hours later, she'll start coughing immediately.

So yes, despite the fact that you can no longer smell the air freshener, it is still in the air and can cause a reaction in someone else.

I agree that you can smell someone's perfume even after they have left a room. Perfume is made to last longer than your typical bathroom spray. All I'm saying is, the average person should not even be able to smell it hours later.

It also depends on how it is used. One quick spray in the bathroom may not be a problem, but realize that if someone sprays extensively, particularly if there is a drift onto a fabric-type surface (carpet, bedspread) that the smell may linger for a looong time.

A few weeks ago there was a problem at my office with an odor from something which was carried through the building. An employee got carried away with this awful "air freshener" and you could distinctly smell the "freshener" days later. It was really bad and several people went home or to other offices until the smell went away. Even people who weren't particular sensitive to smells complained, and many, including myself, got headaches whenever we were in that office. Needless to say, that person will never again use air freshener at work!

This is similiar to a problem I have with cigerette smoke. It could be hours afterwards and I'll have breathing problems walking into the room When I book hotels I make sure they know I have to have a non smoking room and the reason. I know that there is no such thing on the ships, even though you're not to smoke in the room. And of course my luck would be I get the one after a chain smoker ... Does anyone know of a good odor eliminator..not something that masks. Does Oust do a good job of eliminating? Or is there a better product on the market. I'll happily empty a can and stay out of the room for a few hours.
