Hi
I'm going with my aunt who has never been to disney before. We are going to do mostly quick counters meals. (we are not on dining plan). I would like to take her to a couple cool places, living in kansas there not many cool places. What places would you recommend. I'm looking for places that are disney and that are unique. Thanks for your help.

Well, there are so many options. It depends on what price point you are looking at, which parks you will attend and what resort you are staying at. Maybe a character meal would be a good option. They are definitely unique to Disney. And some of the dining options at Epcot are definitely different for someone who does not have access to those types of foods.

The resort hotels on the Monorail offer some neat experiences. How about dinner at the Cali Grill and watch Wishes. Or Ohana with the dinner show. There is also the Hoop Dee Doo and Luau.

All the Deluxes have some great food. Jiko and Boma at AKL, Yachtsman at the YC, Spoodles and Flying Fish at BWI, Artist Point at WL... The list goes on.

And don't forget about 50s Prime Time, Sci-Fi and Brown Derby at DHS. AK also offers Tusker House, Yak and Yeti and Rainforest.

There are just so many options to list. What are your plans?

Your Aunt would probably get a kick out of a character meal, just for fun. I would recommend the Crystal Palace in MK.. and lunch seems to be quieter (kid wise) than dinner or breakfast.

Another cool lunch could be Sci Fi Cafe in MGM where they show monster movie trailers in a drive in movie set up or the Prime Time Cafe where you could get in trouble with Mom.

For something more upscale we really like Boma & Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge, you could go over and see the hotel and the animals on the savanna and then have a nice dinner.

Thanks
I would say somewhere $30 range per person as far as price. We only will be there for a few days and we are not going to AK. We are staying at Por. riverside. I like the idea of Scfi. :thumbsup2

Sci-Fi offers a unique atmosphere and good burgers, ribs, and milkshakes.

Another location that is very unique is in Epcot and falls in your price range even for dinner... Biergarten, it is a buffet in Germany with wonderfully unique atmosphere and entertainment.

Definitely take your aunt to at least one character meal. My parents could never afford to take me or my brother to WDW (besides my dad would never have went anyway, just not his cup of tea). A few years ago we had to put my dad in a nursing home and my mom had to move in with me. That Dec I took her to WDW for her first time to see all the Christmas stuff. Believe it or not, her favorite thing that whole trip was the character meals. That 72 y/o woman loved the attention from the characters and had more fun than any of the kids there. She enjoyed the MVMCP, the Candlelight Processional, Hoop de Doo, the Osbourne Lights, and absolutely loved the World Showcase at Epcot, but her face still lights up when she talks about those character meals and how Pluto, Mickey, and Chip & Dale interacted with her. She still talks about how she dined in the castle at MK and about how Mary Poppins scolded Tigger for getting in our picture with her at 1900 Park Fare one morning. I wasn't even sure she would like the character meals, so I was really surprised at how much she really loved them. I spent most of that trip trying not to cry as I watched her interact with the characters. She looked so happy and as excited as any kid.

I'm taking her back in Sept and we've upgraded from the free DDP to the DxDDP. The other day she just casually asked if we were going to do any character meals on this trip, then immediately said it didn't matter if we didn't. However, when I told her I had booked a character meal for breakfast almost everyday, plus a few for lunch and dinner, her whole face lit up like a Christmas tree and she said she couldn't wait to see Pluto again. Her birthday is Sept 9th and on the day she turns 75 y/o she will celebrate by having breakfast with Pooh and friends at Crystal Palace and dinner that night at 1900 Park Fare with Cinderella, Prince Charming, and the evil stepsisters.

The character meals are pure Disney and can only be experienced at WDW. Give your aunt that opportunity.

For sure a character meal! It just brings the disney experience full circle I think. I think O'hana would be great fun as well. When we went down with family we went to O'hana, we had a sort of family reunion but this was before the grand gathering. Also cinderella's royal table would make amazing memories because you are in the castle

Whispering Canyon is fun, but no characters. 1900 Park Fair is my favorite of the Princess, Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming character meals. And lastly Chef Mickey's... the all time favorite! Mickey and gang are there!

I second Boma. It's great.

As for counter service, we really like Yakitori House in the Japan pavillion at Epcot. The food is tasty and the setting is very peaceful, which is nice.

For uniquely Disney restaurants, I'd recommend (in order of preference):

50's Prime Time
Ohana
Boma
Sci-Fi Dine In
Biergarten
San Angel Inn
Crystal Palace
Liberty Tree Tavern

Another vote for Sci-Fi and San Angen Inn... To save money, you can go at lunch time...You get the same effect with smaller prices ;)

Where are you staying???...Maybe we can suggest something near or even in your resort.

These are some of our favorites:

O'Hana's
WCC
LeCellier
Teppanyaki
Sci Fi
Coral Reef
CRT (dinner)
LTT

I really like the Tusker House. The atmosphere is really neat and they offer a wide range of foods that are unique, but not too unique. Plus, they are one of the more affordable table service options.

1900 Park Fare is a wonderful Buffet and the characters are great. Plus it would let her visit the GF which is beautiful any time of year!

I read your thread and think it is wonderful. I never went as a child for probably the same reasons. I'm still trying to find a way to get my mom to go. I think she would have a blast also.:dance3:

here are our favorites:

narcoosees
coral reef
le cellier
sci-fi
50s prime time
brown derby

liberty tree tavern

Hi there Miss Missy!!! We are also from KS!! ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!! Just got done at the parade in Lawrence for our National Champs!! Boy were there a lot of people. :cool1:

We love doing the character meals. We've been to Liberty Tree Tavern and thought the food was great!! We've also been to Crystal Palace and set our reservation for a late lunch and were practically the only one's in the restaurant with the Pooh characters. This year we're going in September to take part in the free dining and will be able to enjoy more character dining!

Hope you have fun with your aunt! :)

Another great choice if we are not on a dining plan is Rose and Crown. The fish and chips are pretty cheap and you get to do a TS instead of a CS for close to the same cost.
