We used to go to the car dealer to get our oil change, free for three years. At an school auction we bid on an local oil change and won. We continued to go there a few more times no problems. Today we were in the farther away town where we purchased the car from and was having the warranty work done, a recall and had a coupon for an oil change so we ask them to do it.
They call later said the plug pan plug is stripped, surprised it had not fallen out, over a couple of hundreds to fix, really should not drive it. They did not have the part in stock. What did we want to do? Talked of having car towed back to local place who did last oil change.
DH called the local place who said they would call the dealer. Both saw we were doing oil changes with them on time. Local company said we will pay for it have it done where it was, glad the engine had not blown. Out of a car for two days but I was very happy that I didn't have to face that bill. Car dealer said it could of fell out and ruined the entire engine.
DH had drove to town also we could run errands so I luckily had a ride home.

I will say oil drain plugs strip way to easy IMO.

We used to go to Jiffy Lube and they replaced something with the wrong parts. A month later it went in to the dealer and they put the parts in a bag and said you can take it to them but it probably won't matter we see this all the time. $650 to fix it at the dealer because oil had leaked all over, we went back with the parts and spoke to the manager who basically said sorry for your luck. We always go to the dealer now with our newer cars and with the coupons they send out, they don't cost that much more.

I had an oil change place leave my oil cap off once on my car. They paid to tow it and replace the cap and power washed my engine to get the oil off it but is swore it never ran the same after that. Now I only let the dealer change my oil.

I knew someone who owned an oil changing business. He said this was common.
