My kids and I have a trip coming up in May. My son will be missing 4 days of school and my daughter 3. MY son is in 1st grade and my daughter in PK. I am not so much worried about my daughter, but I was worried about my son. They do learn a lot in school and I would hate for him to miss the lessons and activities. My son is doing great in school.

I just kind of felt bad when my son said to me, "Mom why not go to Orlando when the school is over, I don't want to miss my shcool." The only reason why I am taking him out during school is because I need to be down in Orlando so they can check out the schools and see what's the best school down there.

Well...today after school, I talked to his teacher and asked her if there will be any problem taking him out of school and she replied that just to write a note to remind her and the homeworks will be waiting for him when he gets back and to finish the assignments with no rush. She was really nice about it. That made me feel better and my son seems to better too, he was there listening.

Both of my kids go to Catholic School, so I was thinking that the school doesn't worry to much if they miss some school days as long as they are doing well. I think they highly value the "family" just as much as learning, which to me this is important.

::SIGH:: I am just glad that the teacher is OK with it and my son is now OK with it. What a relief! Now I don't feel too guilty for taking the kids out of school...ok...maybe just a little. :)

SOWWIEE...long post!!

I've planned a trip to Tampa in April as a R &R vacation for myself, staying at my ex-husband's house. Let's not go there  .
Anyway, he really wanted me to bring our 2 grandaughters with me as he won't see them this year because they're going to Germany this summer with their parents. So, I hemed and hawed and decided to take them. Unfortunately it's spring break and flights are booked. So we have to fly Tues to Tues and the girls will be missing 2 school days. Their Mom agreed, and as they are both doing well in school it's a go. Make up will be a drag for them tho.

We pulled our DS from school for a week when he was in first grade for our family trip to WDW. I know people get upset by this but too bad. I am not spending thousands of dollars to stand in hour long lines during school vacations. That said we found that he had no trouble when he returned to school. He was a good student and his teacher prepared homework for him to take and he kept a journal of all of his activities. Plus being at the end of the school year he did not miss much. It worked out well. We are returning to WDW again this May and have already informed the teachers of both DS's that we will be away. Our younger DS has the same teacher and she said that it should be no problem. Our older DS's 3rd grade teacher also did not see a problem with it. I wouldn't worry about it. It is only a week and kids catch up very easily.

Glad the teacher was so understanding..

Have a great time!! ;)

I have had those same concerns since my DD started school. Went the same route you did with the teacher. I just make sure that I double up on the amount of time I spend with her in the evenings going over her schoolwork before we leave and after we get back.

Besides, they're only be little for so long before they don't think its cool to go to WDW. If we can put a man on the moon, why can't we do something about the teenage years?
