DH and I trying to figure out a non-Disney vacation for this summer. We live in Virginia Beach and would like to keep it within a 5-8 hour drive......any suggestions would be welcome. (It would be DH, myself and our 13 year old son).

We are thinking about the outerbanks. We rented house there 6-7 years ago and had good time.

How about Hershey, PA? You could do a day or two at Hersheypark. Strasburg is only a short drive away and you could ride the train, go to the various train museums, etc., if you're into that (my DH is!). Lancaster is beautiful, with lots of farms, shops, etc.

Gatlinburg - Pigeon Forge area is lots of fun.

We also enjoy spending a week relaxing in the Outer Banks because we can take the dogs.

How about a visit to the Nation's Capitol -- Washington, DC?

I 2nd DC. We are big lovers of Washington. There is so much to do. Also you can take a very short drive down 95 and check out Baltimore waterfront. Thats really nice also.

We did Ashville nd the Hendersonville, NC area one yr with our teens and they loved it. We climbed Chimney Rock, toured the area, went to Biltmore Mansion in Ashville. We spent about 3 days there, then moved on to Gatlinberg. We spent 2 days at Dollywood, hiked a bit in the
Smokey Mountains and just enjoyed Gatlinberg. The kids loved it.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming!

Washington DC is something we have done before and we are going to Baltimore in June so that is out.

I have heard about Chimney Rock and Tennessee is something we are looking into, I just ordered their tourism guide today, Kentucky also.

englishteacha, I am curious about the trains as my DH and DS love trains. What is there to see in Strasburg?

As for the Outerbanks, we live in Virginia Beach, so to us that isn't a big stretch for a weeks vacation, we can buzz down there for a weekend, so we are looking beyond that.

NYC is a great place. It's a little pricey, however, many of the hotels have been having great specials.

NYC is wonderful, we were there for a day in August and will be going again for Spring break, I think it is one of my favorite places to visit (besides Disney of course).

How about Myrtle Beach. Thats where we are going this year and we have always loved this place. It has something for everyone in the family no matter what age or likes.

Southern end of the Outer Banks. Frisco/Buxton area. Great houses, wonderful beaches, real folks.
