Where to stay?

OK, here's the rundown: we are driving Route 66 next April/May. We are taking 8 or 9 days to make the drive from Illinois to California. Once in California, we have about 5 or 6 days and then we fly home (one way rental car). We've got family to visit and other things to do so Disneyland is only 1 or 2 days of our trip. We want to stay in ONE place the whole week and not keep bouncing around, especially after changing hotels every night on our Route 66 trip.

So we don't really need a hotel walking distance to the parks. But we also don't really want to accidentally land in a crappy area. Any suggestions? We are also interested in VRBO or AirBnB if anyone has one they love, please share. :)

This thread has a lot of helpful information: www.disboards.com/threads/choosing-the-right-hotel-for-you.3656512/. Even if you won't be visiting the parks daily, the hotel information can still be useful. Be careful with STRs in the city of Anaheim. The city banned them, then gave extensions. But the extensions are running out and other properties are operating illegally. So if you want to go that route, I would look in Garden Grove or Fullerton. With so few days at DLR, you will really want to make the most of your time. So I would try to stay close to the parks so that you won't waste time driving and parking. Just being able to walk right to the gates and right back to your hotel can save so much time and hassle. There are several suite hotels that might work well for a longer stay. The above thread should have some information on that.
