Where to stay in London?

We've just decided on a whim (and with the help of very affordable airfares!) to visit London for Spring Break. We're so excited, but totally clueless about where we should stay. We'll be there only 4 nights--arriving late March. Any suggestions for hotels/neighborhoods we should consider as well as what we can reasonably expect to see and do with 4 days in London would be GREATLY appreciated. (There are four of us--DS8, DD12, DH and myself.)
And no, we've never been to London except the airport a couple times!

I know this is a bad time to ask this question--most people are off celebrating the New Year! However, I'm too busy planning this trip--getting very excited about it!--and I'm hoping someone will give me some good ideas!

There is a lot to do in london - museums, art galleries, Tower of London, London Eye, Covent Garden, Shopping (think Harrods if you must) all sorts. What sort of things are your family interested in? How much do you want to spend on hotels? It is not a cheap city.

This is a great place to start looking for info and this one is an online guide which may be helpful.

We were hoping to keep hotels around $200/night. How is the Kensington area, or anywhere around Hyde Park? We'd like someplace where we can feel safe walking at night.
My kids love historic castles, museums, shopping... Just about anything. Except they probably wouldn't be thrilled with art museums.
And do you know of any good ghost tours? My DD and I would love one.
