Hey all...
We are heading to Universal in October, but staying at Disney's FW Campground. We will be taking a cab to Universal... where is the best (cheapest) place to pick up a cab? I read somewhere that it is cheapest to take Disney bus to DTD and take cab from there? We've never been to Universal and didn't want to rent a car for just that day.

Thanks.

Picking it up from DTD would be the cheapest, but honestly, I would just take it from the Fort. The Fort is actually only a couple of miles from DTD, and getting a bus to DTD early in the morning would be a problem. (Nothing opens at DTD till about 9:30 in the morning.)

You would probably want to leave well before that to get to Universal early in the morning.

You might also want to look into a Towncar or Mears for your transfers.

A towncar might actually be a little cheaper than a cab each way.

Mears will be $18 PP round trip.

Thank you. We called Mears and it was going to be close to 100.00 for the 5 of us to get to Universal. We may go ahead and rent a car. I'm checking on that now. I wish there was a place to pick up public transportation. We'd be willing to do that....

Thanks for the info.

Renting a car will probably be the cheapest solution Remember to include the price to park at Universal (and a couple of dollars for gas) when you compare costs. What time do you want to get to Universal and what time do you plan to leave? Non-airport locations aren't open 24/7. Make sure you won't need a 2 day rental.

I don't think I'd use a car service. You'd have to pre-book your return time. I'd rather have the flexibility to leave early, or stay late. A taxi would be my second choice.

edited to add I agree with the PP, I'd take a cab from FW. I guess you could have a taxi drop you off at DTD on your return. Works if you want to shop, or have dinner at DTD. You're likely to wind up spending more $ at DTD then you'll save with a lower taxi fare.

Well, there is - at Downtown Disney. But again you run into the issue of Disney transportation not getting you TO DtD at an early enough time. Plus, the route involves a bus transfer and is entirely indirect. You're welcome to research it at www.golynx.com

Thanks for all the useful info. I did check into Lynx.. and the price is right that's for sure. If we were not in a hurry... it would be fine, but doing the trip planner it had us leaving DTD at 9:05 and not getting to Universal until 11:07.... oh well.

checked into car rental and we would have to rent the night before and we didn't want to pay the extra parking fees.

Since IOA is only opened from 9-6 that day... we were hoping to get there early. So, I think we'll just rent a cab... we can control the time better, we can have it pick us up right at FW and not pay for parking.

Do you know how far in advance you have to book a cab?

Thanks VERY much for all the help.

Running Bell,

There is public transportation via the Lynx bus system. You can get their schedule at: http://trip1.golynx.com/ntp/en/

They have a bus that leave the Contemporary around 7:30 and it will be about a 2 hour trip to Universal. It looks like the fare is $2.00. :confused3
