Starting to get into panic mode, only have one day free to pack for Wednesday flight, I am sure someone will know this, is it ok to pack cameras and film in either checked bags or hand luggage which is safest [ can they get x ray damaged in either]?

Thanks

Chris

We have always packed in our hand luggage - never had any problems.

Like wise no probs in hand lugage but have you thought about going digital?

I think it's only the very very high speed films that might be harmed. Not the sort used by most people - I think it is similar to X Ray type films?

Thanks for the help.

We are digital as well but the boys have film, and as Scott is studying photography at college he is doing an Orlando project he has to use a 35mm SLR with colour and B+W

For security reasons I would never pack anything of value in a suitcase. Valuables are always kept with us at all times.

The xray machines for hand luggage in airports are fine for your films unless they are the ASO 800 types found in waterproof cameras. I think these films will be damaged.

The xray machines used for cases will damage your films as far as I understand it because they are stronger.

Never ever, and I repeat Never ever put film in your checked luggage.

Go here to see what TSA says:

Have a wonderful trip!!
I agree, when you go through the XRay machines not it does say NOT to put in your hand luggage as it can damage te camera and films. Last year on the way back a friend of mine put her camera in the hand luggage and when she went to develop the film the pics were all ruined! she was totally gutted as it had been a special hol for her birthday! any digital ones will be fine thought!

there is a special lead-lined bag that you can buy to carry your film in.
It will protect it when it goes through the hand luggage xray machine.
Usually then they'll open the bag to see what's inside.

When we used to have a camera with film, we always kept the film in that special bag. I assume it's still sold (despite the proliferation of digital).

Even if you put it in your checked luggage, you should still use the bag, as checked luggage is also xrayed (at least in the US, i assume also in the UK)...
Of course, then the TSA people in the US will open your luggage.
Personally, i'd put it in my hand luggage, in that special bag and then have the security people hand search it.
