Where to learn about DVC?

We are heading to the "World" in Aug/Sept and I would like to go to one of the DVC 'talks' I hear about. We will be there for a week and are staying at the YC. Where is the best place to go listen about DVC. We will have our 4 year old with us so it can't be too out of the way or long! We are extremely interested as we visit many many times a year, but we are also florida residents and get fla resident/ pass holder discounts and don't know which is better. Plus there are some resorts we love and some we don't. I don't want to be stuck with staying at resorts that we don't love. Thanks!

First off, I have to say that you could learn just about everything you need to know from spending time reading these boards. But if you are interested in going on the tour, I would go on the Disney Vacation Club website and request a DVD. Odds are you will be contacted by a salesperson and you can arrange a meeting time that works well for you and your family ahead of time. They will pick you up wherever you are and take you to the DVC sales center at SSR. They have a "kids club" of sorts there and your 4 year old will have plenty to do. Or, depending on your child's attention span and the number of gadgets you have to entertain him/her, your child could stay with you during the presentation. The good thing about a DVC sales presentation is that it is as long or as short as you want it to be. If you tell your salesperson that you're getting nervous being away from your child for that long, they will let you go. As far as timeshare presentations go, it's relatively low pressure.

Keep in mind, however, that the salesperson's job is to sell you DVC, typically right then and there. So you will have to strike a balance between genuinely trying to learn about DVC and wasting the salesperson's time if you know for certain that you will not purchase or that you plan on purchasing resale. I'm not saying this is the case with you at all, but I do like to put that out there to try to be respectful of the salespeople who are doing their jobs.

Your best bet is to get all the information, but resist purchasing right then and there, even if you think that you want to. Once you get home, take the time to analyze the numbers, both direct vs. resale purchase as well as owning DVC vs. taking advantage of FL resident discounts. There is a tremendous amount of information to process and it's simply not possible to do so in an hour or two.

many posters come here to complain about what they "thought" their guide told them about DVC. the information here is just flat better. (but it can be a no-pixie-dust zone, so buckle up... )

hang out on these boards. read through different threads to get a sense of what current owners like or don't like...how things have changed for better or worse. scan through the DVC resource thread stickied at the top. ask questions.

one suggestion: DVC works best if you can plan trips 10-11 months out. so for a FL resident, if you're hoping for spur-of-the-moment trips, you may be very limited in resort choice and/or room type...

Since you are at the yacht club, you could walk over to the Boardwalk and visit the DVC model over there. I am sure they would provide you with all the information that you would need. It is located past the stores and before the Big River Grill

If you are really interested in becoming a DVC owner, I would cancel the Yacht Club and rent a DVC reservation from an existing DVC owner. Staying at the resorts that you think that you are interested in can be a great learning opportunity.

the dolphin has a kids club starting at 4-ish. You can make a reservation and drop off the 4-yr old to play while you look at the model. My 4-yr old LOVED the kids club so much that we lamented it wasn't open during daytime hours so we could go to the parks alone
