Where to go in England

Hey ya'all,

I'm an american soldier stationed in England.

Now, I have this weekend free to explore the country...but I don't know where to start?

Sooo...I'm asking, if you were in England, where would you want to explore? Keeping in mind I'm in the north part of the country, near York.

Suggestions? I'm leaving soon!!

I loved York Minster Cathrdral, http://www.yorkminster.org/ - be sure you climb to the top of the tower for a great view of York.
The Lake District area is beautiful (Grasmere, Windermere, etc). Oh wow- here's a web cam of Windermere - oooh, now I wish I was there for the weekend!!

The lake district is a long drive from York. How about going to Leeds (not too far from Harogate), there is quite a bit to do there, good shops etc. If you go to York the minster is worth a visit and so is the Jorvic Viking centre. You could catch the train to London (only about 2 hours express from Leeds which you can get to easily from Harogate) Or you could head for the coast. Scarbrough, Whitby and Filey are within easy driving distance for you. Visiting the sea side is a must if you are in England, plus around there you have the Yorkshire dales which are stunning.

I am origionally from Leeds, near Harogate so if I know the area well (I lived there for 22 years). If you want any more ideas send me a PM and I will help you.

hi, being from liverpool i would have advised you to go there, but it is a bit far, york is a lovely place to visit as has already been mentioned and the people are very friendly, hope you have alovely weekend susie pop daddy thanks for the compliment !!!!

Well, I ended up going to the Metro in Newcastle. Should have been a two hour drive, but i drive 90mph, so, it was only like an hour. I saw the angel of the north too...I suppose it was pretty big.

Saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at the metro...what an awesome, awesome movie. If only women were like that in real life!

I'll second the Liverpool suggestion, especially if you happen to like The Beatles. If you get the chance to go to Scotland, it is also terrific.
