Where to go if you get sick in WDW

Hi!! we leave this Saturday for our trip to WDW!!

this past Sunday I came down with strep throat and started antibiotics. I know that I'll be fine by the time we leave but I'm now worried that my DDs 6 and 3 will come down with this either before we leave or while we're there.


My question is what to do if something happens while we're there. I searched but couldn't find info on this that I know I've read in other threads

I remember reading that there is a certain place to stay away from and that a better alternative is a clinic in a walgreens (I think) not sure which one, though.

Hopefully, we won't have a need for this but I wanted to have the #s with me just in case...

anyone have any info on this???

A few years ago, my DS (who was 5 at the time) got sick. We were staying at OKW, so we asked the CM at the front desk where to go. He recommended Centra Care. There are a few locations and they will come and pick you up if you don't have a car. We did have a car, so the CM gave us directions to the one that is near the Crossroads shopping center. It was very easy to find and the people there were lovely. We were very pleased with the doctor as well.

I hope that you will all be healthy and not need a dr while on vacation!

I was thinking about this today as well. I finally gave in and went to the doctor this morning after fighting a sinus infection for the past 2 weeks. Usually they go away on their own. Not this time - when I woke up feeling like I had toothaches in every top tooth, I went in. I'm now on the Z-pack and we leave on Friday. We have 11 in our group including 6 children so someone is bound to end up with something.

I am also on a z pack...good news is that they say you're no longer contagious after 24 hours on the antibiotic!

When we were there we saw an Urgen care van pull up to the resort and they were walking the doctor back to the room. I dont know if they do that for everyone, but I thought it was nice of them.

That service costs to the tune of $300+ for a house call, plus perscriptions and they don't take insurance. I won't be using it unless someone is deathly ill!!!

There is Celebration hospital, my dd has spent plenty of time there and they take all kinds of insurances
There is also a Urgent Care that is close by, I think the front desk keeps directions of it because they handed me a print out of it and asked if I needed a ride.

My DD used that urgent care when we were down there in March. It's a hopping place, lol (we waited 2+ hours and were worried about missing our cruise). There's also a Walgreen's clinic down the road. We went there first, but the nurse practioner sent us to urgent care (DD had bronchitis).

They took our insurance for seeing the doctor, but we had to pay OOP for the medication ($60+!). They give you a receipt to submit to your insurance company, but TBH, I don't think I was able to get reimbursed. I just ended up submitting it through flex spending.

It's very close to WDW (near DD). Your resort can give you directions.

This is MUCH much easier!

One time (a couple of years ago) my son got a high fever while we were at the Dolphin. I called the front desk, and they said I could call East Coast Medical Network. It's a clinic nearby. I was alone with my kids (DH wasn't along that trip) and it was after 10:00pm. I can't imagine if I'd had to take a cab to a clinic with both my kids! They sent not one, but two doctors to our room (one was the head of the clinic, one was another doctor training to work with them). They brought a huge duffel with tests, turned out my son had a horrible ear infection and was wheezing. They got his wheezing under control with an improvized spacer for his inhaler, had the antibiotics with them, gave me all the paperwork, and meanwhile my DD could rest in bed.

Best of all, the bill was just under $400 but I couldn't believe it when our HMO reimbused it all!

Oh, then 2 days later, wouldn't you know my DD had a high fever as well. SOME TRIP. She had strep. Different docs came, but I was so glad for them.

They visit all the Disney resorts. I even asked what if we thought my son had a broken bone - he said they have an xray van.

It actually is cheaper for the insurance company than a visit to the ER - or at least much more convenient for a family. They were so nice. I keep their card in case (hope I don't) I need them again.

All the Disney resorts should have their number if you need it - they do go to all of them.

No - they don't take insurance. But, they give you all the paperwork. Our (nasty) HMO actually paid all of it. Plus the prescriptions. I was even shocked!

East Coast is very good about providing all the paperwork you need to submit. I was so highly pleased, and would have used them even without our reimbursement. To wait it the hotel room for one hour, while my sick one lay in his bed rather than being out in a waiting room, and getting my other one ready for bed, was a Godsend. My son was so sick. It was worth it.

We didn't have to leave our hotel room.

I don't really get this too much - if we travel out of state, we have to go with someone out of network (we have a "new" HMO now, did have Optimum Choice before - they even covered while we were on the Disney cruise).

So does it matter where you go while out of town? For us it doesn't, as either way we submit the paperwork. If you are covered, it is easier. We have a large ($50 now, was $75) copay for ER. But I didn't even have to pay that when I submitted the paperwork with the East Coast, or the cruise.

No, I don't think it really matters when it is an emergency and you havea to go to the hospital. I just checked with my insurance website just for a reference.
We were at Universal in Sept. and my DGD(6) who has some special needs fell on her back pretty hard so Universal called an ambulance and she was taken to the children's hospital in Orlando. I'm not sure if they were a provider or not but our insurance did cover the visit. The hospital billed our insurance and we got billed for the copay afterwards.
Urgent Care facilities may be handled differntly, so for us, I prefer to go to one who is our network.

I would just call the pediatrician who prescribed the antibiotics for the strep in the first place and ask for "just in case of fever and sore throat" prescriptions for the rest of the family. Now that's normally something that is not done, but a planned Disney World trip is different, they'll probably understand. And a $4-8 rx for some amoxicillin now is a heck of a lot cheaper than a $400 urgent care visit. Not to give away my day job, but if you were my patient, I'd certainly do that.....

We've used the Centra Care on Hwy 192 @ Formosa Gardens Blvd. Expensive, but our insurance reimbursed. We did have to wait quite awhile, but no surprise there. I would have loved to have someone come to the resort, and I will be putting that number down for just in case on our next trip. Great suggestion!
