We are looking for decent airfare for HH for Feb or March. We haven't booked HH yet, because all the airfare is close to $400 each. I am looking at flying into HHI or Savannah. Are there any other choices? How is Savannah? Is it too long of a drive? We've never been so any help is appreciated :sunny:

We live in CT and my mother lives in HH. She can get a flight from Bradley that connects in Charolette to HH from about $300. Savannah will be cheaper and is about an hour away. They do a servicie like Mears that runs shuttle to HH. If you rent a car the drive is like 30 minutes thruway then 30 on Route 278, not a bad drive at all.

Savannah is only about a little less than an hours drive away. It is an easy drive. Here is the directions below to HH from the airport.......

From Savannah International Airport (approx. one hour)

Leaving airport, take Airways Avenue West to I-95 North.

Travel I-95 North approx. 12 miles to South Carolina Exit 8 -- Hilton Head Island/Bluffton.

Cross over the Hilton Head Island bridge and continue straight on Route 278 East BUSINESS (William Hilton Parkway).

After approx. 8 miles (approx. 10 traffic lights after bridge), turn right into Shelter Cove Harbour and follow the road straight back to the harbor.

Veer right and follow the road across the bridge to Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort.

I am not sure if you have Airtran flying out off your area but they do fly into Savanna going through Atlanta. They are a low cost airline but I believe they have the newest fleet in the industry.

Go to www.Airtran.com and you can get fairs from their site.

There is a small airport on HH Island but they only take smaller planes and it can be pretty expensive.

Thanks to all who replied (and Nick for the directions). I was able to find a flight for $247 flying into newark and then on to Savannah. We were hoping to go for a long weekend (thursday through monday) and with the connecting flights it looks like we would spent too much of the time traveling. We are used to nonstop 3 hour flights to Orlando. I guess we will wait and see if they have a super cheap sale then it would be worth it to change planes. (plus we have a 3 year old and one plane ride is enough for her:p )

I just flew into Savannah for work two weeks ago. It is a very easy airport to get around in. Plus, the rental car area is very convienent; walk out the door, and your at the cars.

What about Charleston? We are flying into their airport, then are driving south to HHI. Any thoughts on that?

Its about 108 miles from Charleston to HH. Savannah to HH is around 50-60 miles.

Thanks for the idea. I checked it on mapquest and it looks to be about a 2hour drive. That is doable IF we could get a nonstop flight to Charleston from Boston. I am checking Providence also right now. If we have to change planes we might as well fly into Savannah. Thanks, though.

We usually fly into Savannah and have had no problems there except with rental cars. If you go during peak (summer) and rent a mini-van there may not be any left. We had this problem but National was able to get one for us from Budget.

This past summer we actually flew into Jacksonville, FL (2 1/2 hours away). We did this because we were able to save over $750 between airfare and car rental.

We went in May 2002. Delta seemed to have the most choice of flights and the main connecting point was Atlanta then on to Savannah. Unless it has changed you will have to make at least one connection. US Air had flights from Boston to Charlotte and then you connected to Hilton Head. This last connection was on a smaller prop-jet airplane. It was an easy drive (45 min)to Hilton Head from Savannah Airport and the City of Savannah is a beautiful day trip from DVC HH. Lowest acceptable rental car (for me) was a Ford Taurus that was priced at $179/week in Oct. I failed to rent it and wound up paying $260 and watched rates just rise from there til we departed. As another poster mentioned it is a smaller airport and the rental lot we saw only had about 100 cars in it. Maybe they bring them in from offsite. HH is harder to get to from Mass and it is a longer trip than Florida (approx. 4hrs air & 45 minutes drive from Savannah). It is worth it.
