My mom really needs a pair of walking shoes in a 12 wide or extra wide. She used to be a size 10 but her feet are always so swollen after 2 surgeries :(. She needs something with some support. She has ordered several pair from zappos and nothing is working. Where can she go?

Thanks!

I have size 11/12 feet and I get most of my shoes from zappos. The shipping is so fast, and returning is so easy I just order different pairs until I find something that works.

Another idea would be to go to a Famous Footwear (or similar) and try some men's shoes. I've worn men's running shoes before, no problem.

Good luck!

I've seen size 12's at Nordstrom Rack and a few at DSW.

I also agree with the PP about going to New Balance and getting fitted by a real person.

Find running store I find men's fit better normally size 10 to 11 in woman's

So see when I stick my foot in my mouth I have real problems

Great advice everyone. Going to check out a New Balance store, Famous Footwear, and look into men's sneakers. Will also check out the other places.

I love my New Balance. I am a Size 12 (No surgeries here just big foot...Lol) For dress shoes I go to Payless, but for walking shoes I agree to just to take her and get a comfortable pair of mens shoes.

When my mother was in chemotherapy her normally very narrow feet became huge. Not even wide shoes would fit.

So we ended up getting men's shoes as they are so much wider.

My mom doesn't have large feet, but she does have a lot of issues with shoes. Due to an accident, she has rods in her legs, and as she's gotten older her bones have shrunk but her rods did not; this causes her a good deal of pain sometimes as she is "lopsided" in her gait.

She kept buying shoes that felt comfortable in the store, but after wearing them for a bit, they ended up being very uncomfortable for her. I kept telling her to go to a running store so they could fit her, and she kept putting it off. Finally, when she came to visit me the last time I took her myself, and they fitted her with a pair of New Balance (she tried several).

Though the shoes cost 3x as much as other shoes she's bought, they're the first shoes she's worn in years that remained comfortable after wearing them around for awhile. Instead of needing to replace them right away due to discomfort, she's saving money by spending more in the first place!

Definitely get her to a running store (not the Nike store, or New Balance, Dick's, Famous Footwear, etc., but a REAL running store with multiple shoe options; do a Google search for ones near you) and have her fitted!

Try www.naturalizer.com.

We were able to find nice women's shoes for a family member in a size 12 extra wide there.

I might agree with the New Balance, but first a visit to a podiatrist is in order. A podiatrist can make suggestions on what will work best for your mother to make sure that all of her needs are met. My mother had diabetes and Medicare annually paid for one pair of special shoes with softer uppers as well as custom insoles. The shoes were Dr. Comfort brand and could be ordered with ties or Velcro closures depending on the needs of the patient. I was able to purchase additional pairs separately. It's worth finding out if shoes might be covered by insurance as a medical necessity.

I see the same podiatrist, and she has a display of not only Dr. Comfort shoes but also New Balance walking shoes, such as I choose for myself. I have wide feet, and New Balance is my preferred brand since they offer my size with the deep toe box and support that I need. I never buy any shoes without working with a trained fit expert at an NB store. The less expensive styles sold at Kohl's, Sears, and such will not work for me.

I find SAS shoes go wider than New Balance. My aunt has very swollen feet from her back surgery this summer, and her shoes still fit. She's also has a ton of other issues with her feet and it's one of the only brands she can wear. They're also very good at giving good feet measurements.

Go to a real new balance store and get fitted by a real person.

Exactly where I was going to send her. My mother had two different size feet and they give a you a good discount on the 2nd pair. They were different by 2 sizes.

You don't mention what kind of shoes you're looking for. If it's for comfortable shoes, I have to agree - and stress!!! - going to a "real" running store (not Dicks, not Nordstroms, etc) and get fitted. Take the socks you want to wear and be prepared to spend some time. A friend and I went when we were training for the 60 miler. She was fitted within about 10 minutes and quite happy. It took me much longer - almost an hour - but I've never owned more comfortable shoes. I don't have wide or hard to fit feet, but I ended up in a men's running shoe and I don't mind at all. They feel wonderful!

Also, if you're looking for dress shoes, you could look at barefoottess.com. The shoes are expensive, but we've found good quality and very stylish shoes.

My friend with 12W feet hates shoe shopping, and I don't blame her. I wish you luck!!
