So this quarter, Discover's 5% kickback is for "department stores and online shopping."

I'm about to purchase cabinetry from Home Depot, and wondering if I put this on my Discover Card, would it qualify? It's a store, it has departments... I doubt it, but if the answer's yes, then it would be a good deal...

Of course I can call and ask them, but that would involve actually speaking with someone... anybody know if there's a list somewhere online of what counts as what?

IIRC, Home Depot is classified as "Home Improvement".

Department stores = JCPenney, Dillards, Kohl's, Macy's, etc.

Home Depot is definitely not a department store. Discover clearly states such stores sell a wide variety of merchandise with separate checkout counters in each deartment. This definition even rules out Kohls.

Check if your kohls has a home depot gift card or get a home depot gift card online.

Yes, I saw that in the fine print when I went back and looked later. I still wish they would publish a list, though. You hear horror stories of things that don't post because of the way a store is coded (buying gas at a Safeway or an Aafes, for example.)

Tks!

Hmm. Makes sense, but then exactly what is Kohl's, if not a department store? :confused3

Also, what if she orders the cabinetry from HD's web site (assuming you can do that, I never tried?)
Now I've got one more thing to think about besides the work I should be doing now!

I was trying to figure out the same. I made some big purchases at Target earlier in the month, and it looks like it's showing up as a supermarket. I would call it a department store before I'd call it a supermarket!

I agree via def it would rule out Kohls but it is kohls dept store and what is diff between kohls and jcpenny other than brands and locations of check outs

I'd not call target a dept. store, supermarket would be closer to my defination.

Many targets still don't have groceries (or just that very small selections). Target is usually classified as a department store industry-wise, even if its not for this credit card offer.

Just checked my statement....Here's how my recent charges were classified:

Home Depot = Home Improvement
Target = Supermarket (but this location is a SuperTarget, so YMMV)
Kohl's store = Department store
Kohl's online = Merchandise
Sam's gas purchases = Gasoline
Sam's store purchases = Warehouse Clubs

Clear as mud, right?!?

And just like that, I love you! Now to call Kohl's and see if they even carry HD gift cards... (And how much is the cashier going to hate me for paying the first $1500 in gift cards????-- After $1500, it goes back to the regular percentage, so may as well just charge the other $4500...)

So I just talked to my local store, and they *DO* carry the cards, in denominations of $25 and $50... so this could be pretty hilarious... somewhere between 30 and 60 gift cards... :rotfl2: But hey, it's $75 for free...

Dumb question -- wouldn't Kohl's charge some sort of activation fee on a Home Depot gift card? (Or did I miss something?)

Nah, they only charge those fees on the "Visa Vanilla" type cash-value-spend-it-anywhere kind of cards.

I'm loving the home depot gift card from Kohls idea. But I wonder.......

1) should you call discover and make sure that Kohl's counts- hate to do all that work to find out they don't qualify based on a technicality

2) Do gift card purchases count as the "right kind" of purchases for the 5% bonus

3) and what other cards does Kohl's sell?
We leave for disney in 2 days and wondering if they have chain restaurant gift cards, or disney gift cards?

Thanks to whomever came up with this idea....Wile-E-Coyote, super genius.....

Kohls I worked at carried Olive garden/red lobster, I tunes, Home depot, Lowes, spa finder, best buy, subway. Sure they had others but drawing blank. No DISNEY:(
