We are deciding which resort we would like to call "Home" at the moment. We know we will need appox 250 points(two weeks every other year).Last trip we stayed at BC and loved it,location was perfect for us and the pool was amazing.
Looking into resale points their is a big difference in price between eg Old Key West-BLT.I know we dont have to stay at our "Home" resort,so

Would it be worth buying OKW but stay where we really like (Boardwalk area, BLT)? or is that the wrong way to go about it.We would be looking to vacation easter or late August.
Any tips would be great to get me through this minefield!

Remember that there are a few hundred thousand DVC members, many of whom think the location at the BW/BC is great and the BC pool is fantastic, and only a few hundred rooms at the BCV (a few hundred more at BWV). And people aren't buying more expensive BCV points to stay at OKW (generally speaking). Some times of year you won't have an issue trying to book a room in the Epcot area - but sometimes you will. There is a reason BCV points are more expensive.

You really need to buy where you love to stay. As more members are added, getting your favorite resort at 7 months is becoming more difficult.

there are 2 rules that most would suggest:

1) buy where you want to stay

2) buy where you don't mind staying

if you can book 10-11 months in advance and you want to stay at a specific resort most of the time, then buy there.

if you can book 10-11 months in advance and you don't mind where you stay except that you'd hate it if you got stuck at resort "ABC", then buy a resort other than "ABC".

(several owners have posted that they don't like SSR/OKW but bought there since it was cheap and they will always stay elsewhere - but as crisi posted, the math on that doesn't work for the long term. some owners might get lucky at the 7 month window...but several have posted that they were "stuck" at their home resort and their waitlists never came through. it happened to me.)

if you can't book until 6-7 months in advance and you're just happy to be at wdw, then buy the cheapest combination of upfront costs and annual dues that you can find.

Bill and Charles nailed it right on the head. Buy where you fit the most
Good Luck

Unless a specific resort really matters to you - like you only want to stay at BLT every trip for the rest of your life and would be unhappy elsewhere, then I say buy the most points for the least amount of $$ and the longest contract.

If you are vigilant about calling right at 7 months, you can pretty much get anything. If you are not going to be vigilant about 7 months, you won't be vigilant about 11 - so it probably does not make a difference.

In my personal 5 years of ownership, the only things I've had any trouble getting at 7 months have been HHI in June or July, tree houses, BWV standard , BCV during opening weekend F&W (BW was available). We stay at different resorts each trip and lately, we've been rotating between BCV and AKV - but I have two BWV stays booked for October and December.

I began reading these boards as a new DVC owner and was convinced that home resort was uber- important, but I think it's really an urban legend unless an owner is just very, very, very specific and high maitanance about what they want.

:thumbsup2, the only place I'm very specific about is VB for our spring break, which is why we own there. At WDW not so much.

In our 5 yrs of ownership, we've been able to book pretty much what we've wanted. To be honest when I call at 7 months, I have my ABC choices and we've always gotten our A. Now I do call at 11 months for Easter and Thanksgiving to stay at our home resorts. Our MLK long weekend trip, I wing it at 7 months and have stayed at BCV/BWV with a BW view and just booked BLT yesterday.

I was really surprised at what was available for October studios when I called last July. :scared1:
