My husband and I recently found a beautiful leather couch at Restoration Hardware I have never bought leather furniture before I wanted to do some research. Does anybody have any experience with Restoration Hardware or buying leather furniture I wanted to last a long time.

We bought a leather sectional from Ashley Furniture 3 years ago and it looks like the day we bought it --- it gets used every night by all 4 of us to watch TV. We don't allow the dog up on it, though, so that may have helped. It was not in their showroom, we had to look through a catalog to get it.

Haven't bought Restoration Hardware, just can't pay the prices on it. But my friend has a Pottery Barn leather chair and she loves it.

I too am having trouble with Restoration Hardware's prices. I know not all furniture is the same quality but I'm trying to figure out what makes theirs so much more expensive. I haven't looked at Ashley yet but definitely will before I pull the trigger

Just make sure it's leather and not bonded leather. We bought bonded leather and it looked good for about 6 years and then it started to flake. Once it started it didn't stop. After a few months our furniture looked diseased. We ended up replacing it with microfiber.

Just don't get Lazy Boy. I've never been so disappointed in furniture, ever.

I am going to have to second this, our leather furniture from Lazy Boy has not held up. I am disappointed. He leather has not held up well nor has the frame. DH has to flip the couch over every couple of months to tighten the bolts.

We bought the leather protection plan that the sales guys said would cover everything, even normal wear and tear. We had the 3rd party insurance people come out and deny our claim and then deny our appeal. The only positive is now I have firm proof for DH that salesmen lie and that "extended/special" insurance is a big scam. ::yes::

I'd highly recommend Flexsteel Latitudes line. We've had a set of their club chairs with ottomans about 3 years. They are really comfortable and wear well. Leather still looks great!

We have a Pottery Barn leather couch, chair, and ottoman that have held up beautifully. They're 8 years old now and still look great.

Apparently they are made by this company: http://www.mgbwhome.com/ in North Carolina. They aren't hand tied, but they are really well made.

That is good info about 'bonded' leather!

I don't have any leather.... But, we have seen a set of leather living room furniture at Bassett (electric power recliner.. s w e e t !!!) That looks really excellent.

We do have furniture from Bassett, and it has been really good quality.

Agree 100%. Expensive and so disappointing. We had to have an arm replaced while it was still under warranty, so my DH took apart the old one. Inside was the flimsiest cardboard ever. No wonder the arm caved in.

We have had a leather Living room set from Natuzi for 21 years. The couch and Love Seat almost still look new. The Chair was used by the dogs for years to look out the Window and the top of the back of the chair was worn and ripped. Our fault. Leather is top grain and there is no bonded leather on the couch at all. I think 20 Years ago the set cost $2,000. We went back were we bought the set and are awaiting delivery on new set that cost about $6,000. But hey if we get another 20 Years out of it. We will be happy. We will cover the chair with an existing cover so the dogs can still look out the Window.

Stay away from Bonded Leather and Statements like Leather where you touch. That means that the backs and sides are not leather.

Restoration Hardware is quite expensive, but the quality is generally good. I should say ahead of time that I've only actually purchased their light fixtures and hardware, but it's nice. Generally, it's a bit on the pricey side, but the design is lovely and the quality good.

ETA: It looks like RH is having a sale on leather furniture right now--plus free shipping on sofas/couches (actually, anything over $150).

We got our leather loveseat & sofa from Bassett in spring 2010. Both still look great & have held their shape well.

Except for the one arm on the loveseat that our cat scratched - but that's hardly the furniture's fault.

At the time, Bassett was the only place where we could find the color of leather that we liked - it's this gorgeous caramel color that I just love.

We also really appreciated Bassett's level of customer service & attention to detail.

When I'm buying furniture, I shop around. I've shopped Ashley a few times and the quality of their materials and construction just doesn't measure up. For instance, their pillows are only upholstered on one side. I just can't live with the bad/cheap construction. We've had great luck with Kittles if there is one near you. We got two leather Lazy Boy recliners and they are still in great shape. I do clean the leather and moisturize it. We bought a leather ottoman from Restoration Hardware about a dozen years ago-end of the year sale, great deal or I would not have bought for it. It's good. Our large Ottoman/coffee table from Havertys is showing some wear, cuts and one side broke down. It's not horrible and I've done some repair to improve the look of the leather. Whatever you decide, take your time and educate yourself by listening to the sales people. Some of them really know their field, some don't. I hope you find something you love!

I will also have to say to stay away from Lazy Boy. We bought a leather sofa and recliner there about 7 years ago and it looks like junk. It was one of those "there's leather everywhere it touches your body." The vinyl or pleather, or whatever it is they use on the sides and backs of the furniture cracks, rips and peels. Stay far, far away.
