I've done a little reading about pin trading and I think I get the idea. Now I just need to get my kids some pins. I'm sure they will want to purchase some in the parks, but I would like to get them started off with a good set before they go so they have some to trade. I would like to buy a bigger set- about 40 to 50 so they can each have quite a few. It won't really matter if there's duplicates as long as it's not more than two and it won't really matter if there's some they don't like because they can just trade those. What does matter is that they are good quality and tradable at Disney! Where is a good place to buy such pins online?

Also, where is a good place to buy a lanyard? I'd like to have them before we go. Are there kid size ones? My 5 year old is pretty small and I can see it hitting him in the private area (not to be inappropriate) because they seem kind of long. Also, what do you put on the bottom of these lanyards?

Thanks!

When you get to WDW, or to your resort you will find pins( lanyards) everywhere. All the shops have them. Sometimes you'll see a Kiosk selling them.
Visit www.disneystore.com and do a search for PINS and you can start looking at them right away.
Note that once inside WDW there are literally HUNDREDS OF pins to choose from.
The largest selection in one physical place will be in Downtown Disney at the
World of Disney and Disney's Pin Traders;)

Beware: its an addiction:laughing:

I bought a lot of 50 pins off ebay for something like $31. VERY reasonable so go check ebay. Ebay also has laynards but check Michael's $1 spot too because I found something after ordering them from ebay and they were only $1.

So... if you bought them off ebay were you happy with the quality? How will I know I'm getting something that can be traded at Disney World? Are there certain things to look for? I'm all for getting 50 pins for $31 but not if they're a bunch of junk.

Discussions about buying pins from any place other than Disney belong on the Collectors board, so I've moved this one. :)

Okay! Sorry about that... I didn't even know there was a collectors board! Wow! This place is huge.

DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT buy huge lots of pins for little money. Remember if it is too good to be true.....

Some people don't have a conscience and don't care if they buy reproductions (fakes or scrappers), but please don't trade these into the parks. People who do this are only hurting the fun of trading. Remember that you would not want to spend your hard earned money for good pins only for your children to receive fake or scrapper pins. If you buy in large quanitities, this is most positively the case.

There is an lengthy information thread here on the collectors forum about fake pins and ebay purchases. Read it. It is LONG, but full of info you will want.

You can also visit www.pinpics.com for pictures and information regarding pins that are being traded but are fake/scrappers.

Good luck! Have fun!

Oh my! Perhaps this is a little too complicated for me. I certainly don't want to buy counterfeit pins and try to trade them with anyone! But I just think my boys would like this... but was thinking it would cost less than I thought. If I have to pay $7 for a pin I don't think I'll want them to trade it! I guess it would just be easiest to wait until I'm at Disney and buy them there. Then I know they're not fakes. But I really wanted to buy a bunch early and give them to the boys throughout the summer before they go. If we wait until we're at Disney to buy them I just don't see them wanting to trade something they just purchase. And how will I know if what I'm trading for isn't counterfeit too? What is the cheapest a pin will cost- assuming it's real?

You can buy some of the starter sets in park and pay about $4 a pin for some of the larger sets. retiredreadingspecialist sells good pins on ebay. Also I've had pretty good luck with true blue 2006, finally thewill sells nice pins. Hope this helps.

My childen, who are 9, both trade as well as my husband and me. But take note that pin trading is NOT a cheap hobby. You can buy starter sets in Disney and on Disney's website. It will come with approximately 6 identical pins. One to keep and 5 to trade. When at the park, when you spend $30 in certain souvenir areas, you will have the opportunity to buy a pin for a dollar. You won't know what the pin is because it will be wrapped in black. However, this pin may or may not be something you wish to keep. But for a $, it becomes one of your trading pins if you don't want it. Also, there are eBay sellers (again check out the thread to find out who you can trust) who sell pins at reasonable prices.

Now, that being said, I would love to send your boys a pin each for trading purposes. They are authentic pins that I have obtained by trading or purchasing in Disney myself. I am not an eBay seller, but I want kids to get the fun experience of doing it the right way and not being taken by the jerks who are trying to ruin our fun!

So, I am going to issue a challenge to my fellow DISers to donate a pin to you also. If you can purchase a starter set and get 5 or so more for each boy, then you can go from there.

How about it fellow DISers - are you up for the challenge?????

If she agrees get her shipping info and I will send one.

The ones that I bought are all high quality, collectors, cast members or hidden mickey pins. They are all tradable in the parks. Look for sellers that state that they are tradable in the parks.

I can take that challenge. :) I may be listing some pins on eBay but they will ONLY be legit!!! :) But yes, if the OP will share her info I will send her 2 pins to trade, or keep, whichever they decide to do. :)

OP for the big thread mentioned please use the link in my signature. And please be aware that the person who mentioned getting 50 pins for $31 was likely trading scrappers (fakes) in the parks. :( I understand wanting to do it on the cheap but pin trading isn't that cheap of a hobby. It is fun and my family of 4 loves it but it's not cheap!! so please keep that in mind when starting out.

when we first started we bought the starter sets in the parks, they were about $4-6 per pin and we purposely bought ones we didn't like so we wouldn't want to keep them. LOL

Please forgive the tone of this reply because it may read much worse than I intend.

Fake/Scrapper pins are becoming better and better looking. However, they are still fake! A seller is NOT going to tell you that they are fake! Why would you buy them?? Also, the seller will typically use that exact phrase "tradable in the parks" because they want you to "feel" confident in your purchase. You just can't sell pins for under a $ each when you pay much more for them. Again, if it sounds too good to be true.......

bamamolly, I would be willing to bet that if you searched pinpics.com you would find that the pins you received in that lot are on the scrapper's list. Now what is going to happen is you will trade them into the park and some innocent person who doesn't know any better will end up with the fake junk which is so not fair. CMs don't have the time to scrutinize every pin to see if they are fake or not and sadly enough this just puts the bad guys in line to make more money. Disney is taking a stand against scrapper pins and they are trying to stop the process, but it is a long and hard battle ahead. Please be aware of what you are buying and doing and help us stop the scrappers and keep the fun of this hobby safe!!

Wow! You guys are so generous. I don't know how to send you shipping info without just posting it here and I don't think I want my address posted on the dis boards!

I'm still very nervous about starting on this hobby. I would like to do it right and not collect "scrapper" pins. I'm willing to spend more to get real pins, but then I'm just not sure how we'll know if we're trading for real pins or fakes. That's what I'm most worried about. If I put in the extra $ to buy some nice pins then my boys go to the parks and want to trade, how in the world will they know if they're trading for real or fakes? I wouldn't want to spend lots of $ on real ones only to trade them for a few dollars worth of junk!

You could private message one of the people here to send the address? Don't blame you for not wanting to post the address openly. If you decide to buy traders in park, I would not trade CMs for "hidden mickeys" as they are being scrapped heavily. If I were you I would buy from a recommended ebay seller whose lots were on backs (that way you could check the sku vs pinpics) and also not pay over $2.00 to $2.50 a pin. Then if you happened to get a "scrapper" while trading it wouldn't be a great loss especially if you like the pin you traded for. Attend a trading event if it is available during your vacation you will probably find someone who is a collector (experienced and non) to trade with. If you do trade "value" for "value" such as a LE pin for another LE pin. Try to enjoy the experience as much as possible and remember it is supposed to be fun.
Hope this helps a little - have a great vacation.

thanks for the information. I am also looking for some for my kids. for the seller true blue 2006 is that with the spaces? I found one that only had a feedback of 1.

You might also want to see if disneystore.com has any pins on sale. And maybe they have some sort of shipping discount.
Worth a look. And as long as you buy direct from Disney you know they are legit
You might want to also check a regular Disney Store if you have one locally.
