Where to buy clothes for heavy kids?

DD10 is 5 ft.3 1/2 inches and weighs about 105 pounds.

I went to buy her some back to school clothes and NOTHING kids size fit. I did manage to get her one pair of pants from La Senza Girl (size XXL) as well as 3 t-shirts (XL).
She has grown A LOT in the past year ( ex. has gone form a kids size 4 shoe to a ladies size 8 in 12 months).

I bought her a kids size 16 bathing suit from the sears catalogue and had to return it due to it being at least 2 sizes too small. Walmart girls size large as well as Zellers does not come close to fitting. She only wears pants with elastic waists since her tummy is quite chubby.

Any suggestions on wear to buy her clothes that would be nice for a 10 year old girl? I have taken her into Ricki's, Stitches etc., but the styles are too mature for her.

I am clueless about this since I was TOO skinny as a kid.
Thank you

Hi Rui girl
Mel here
My nieces --both shop at Cotton Ginny --cool styles and they have bigger sizes --and respectful of people's weight and size .
Hugs Mel

Old Navy also does a 1/2 size option which has more room in the waist and hips. I have the opposite problem with my DD12. She is supper skinny. I buy her jeans and then have to have them altered. She is at the age where the adjustable waist is not cool. Good luck in your shopping.

Definitely not Old Navy. I have a "larger" 5-year-old, and a "skinny" 7-year-old, and I've always bought Old Navy for the older, but not the younger. They tend to be cut very slim. My little one isn't that large, she's 46" and 55 pounds but even the size 8 husky with no elastic can't fit her.

I have the same problems with her. She wears a size 8, but is too little for zippers and buttons on pants. So far, I've had some good luck with Children's Place (but I know their sizes max at 14), and surprisingly H&M which has some balloon-type-style pants that fit her.

I've been reading these posts for further inspiration. Just as it's hard to find something "young" for your DD, it's hard to find something kindergarten-ish in the big girls' dept for my DD.

And I thought I would luck out with hand-me-downs by having my DDs exactly 2 years apart :rotfl:

I work for a clothing company and if the 16 isnt fitting right, its time to try women's sizes or from the juniors in any department store. a 16 girls is close to a womens 4 I belive. Often you can find petite lengths too and there in no need to hem longer pants ect.
Good luck

My dd is 6 and is "solidly built". She is a very active kid and has slimmed down somewhat as she has grown, but she is no "skinny-minnie" for sure. She doesn't have a flabby belly, but she is solid.

Shopping can be very frustrating. She would fit better into boys clothes if only because of the cut. I don't understand this, as children at this age are built the same ... you have skinny boys and skinny girls, just like we have solid boys and solid girls!!

In the past I had better success in the States buying her clothes. For some reason I find clothes to have a fuller cut ... we avoided button up stuff and stuck to elastic waist things. I always check out Target and KMart when we go. I usually have better luck there. Up here, I also like Please Mum and Children's Place. I have bought bigger sizes before and had the length altered to fit. Now that she is taller we are not having to do this so much.

I have also discovered Lands End catalogues and they offer clothing in sizes up to 16 for girls (I think) and there is plus size for kids. They have all the measurements in their catalogue and on-line so you could see where she lies. They are VERY accurate and are more generous in their cuts. The nice thing about them is that you can return something to a Canadian address if you have to, plus if something doesn't fit and you want an exchange they will reship more to you at no extra shipping charge. You also just pay a basic shipping charge, no extras, which is nice. Check it out on-line and then order a catalogue. It can't hurt to try this route for her.

Good luck in your search!!

My cousins 7 year old is tall and solid. She has been wearing women's size clothing for awhile now. Harder to get cute styles but there are some out there that cater to the teen market that work for her. Shorts, pants and t-shirts work the best. Dresses are difficult but possible.

I just went shopping today, and lucked out at gymboree. I don't usually go in there because I find their styles a little fussy. I didn't realize but they have a whole line of "plus" clothes. I was able to find 2 pairs of "plus" plain jeans for my 5-year-old. She only needed the 6 plus (she's usually an 8) and there's plenty of room... I even need to use the elastic waist! That's never happened before!

They don't have a lot of plus sizes in store, but they told me they're on their website:

http://www.gymboree.com/shop/dept_c...older_id=2534374305439043&bmUID=1187203066080

The sizes only go up to 12-plus so not sure if it'll work for you.

My wee-wee is just so happy she can have a pair of Jeans like her big sister :cheer2:

I have a tall skinny daughter. She is 13 now, but she has been getting her clothing from the womens dept since she was 10. There are good choices and age appropriate in the womens section. S

I found the original post misleading--5'3" at 105lbs really isn't heavy. I think the issue is more finding age appropriate clothes for a ten year old. Good luck, it's hard because they want to fit in with their friends.

It's not that these girls are heavy, it's just that they don't fit the regular-sized clothes in stores right now. Particularly for girls, the clothes nowadays tend to be cut slim and long. The higher the size, the longer - not wider.

I think the standards are way off.

At 5"3' & 105, she would need Women's petit.

My DS 11 is 5"7 & about 115 & he is now taking Men's S to M shirts & Men's size 10 shoe! He's thin & tall...kid's clothes dont' work!

Wow!! That must be one large child!! At 7, my "tall" kid was wearing a 10 or 12...not adult clothing!

We found lots of cheap age appropriate clothing at Stitches for dd11. Their is very little at Stitches that is too mature. In fact we do most of our shopping there because it is fashionable but not hoochie mama.

My daughter is 9 and about the same size. I have had luck with Old Navy women's small sizes. I have also found stuff in junior size at Giant Tiger. I live on the border and am able to get things from Target. They have a junior line that fits as well. I am basically looking at small women's sizes for her. She is also in a size 7 shoe.

If there's one near you, try H&M. their kids section has a "14+" size which is quite roomy. I was there today and looked in the girls section, because I can fit into alot of it(I'm just a little taller than your DD)... and everything I saw was so cute!... yet it was "grown-up" enough that I will wear alot of it. The prices are VERY reasonable too.

and another big plus for H&M... they have DISNEY clothes/accessories for kids!! ::MickeyMo Right now there's not much in the girls section (just one tshirt), but I was told by a sales clerk that they will be probably be getting more Disney stuff in because they do carry a big disney line! :smickey:

Walmart girls size large as well as Zellers does not come close to fitting. She only wears pants with elastic waists since her tummy is quite chubby.

The problem is partly in where you are shopping - these clothes are usually made in Asia with Asian-size bodies to judge sizing by.

My DS son is tall and wide-shouldered but chubby in the tummy and butt - I find the best clothing sizes and choices at Northern Getaway (Canadian store). I'm on their email list so I get advance notice of sales. I notice there are about three times a year that jeans and pants go on sale: October, January and mid-spring (post-Easter).

As you will notice, these are all just after major clothes-buying seasons for kids. So I buy a couple pairs of Wal-Mart or Zellers pants that do manage to fit and wait until the Northern Getaway sales to get the rest. They have jeans, cargo pants, etc. in various cuts, lengths and waist options. Bet you'll find something to fit. Their girls clothes are really cool, too.

I drive almost an hour into the city to buy clothes here - it's worth it.
