This is my first post, and already I am overwhelmed and excited just thinking about WDW (see, I'm also trying to get into the lingo)

My DH, Danny and I are planning (well, mostly ME) to travel to WDW in mid to late September, and have absolutely NO idea where to begin. Mind you, I can plan a cross-country move with pets and travel, while hubby can travel around the world (he's a merchant marine) with simply his contact case and passport, but when it comes to even start with this trip, we draw a giant painting of BLANK.
Neither of us have ever been there, though we both fondly remember all those wonderful Disney Sunday Night shows highlighting both theme parks (I even remember the specials that the Osmonds used to host at the park.....yes, I'm old....)

The official site seems to deal with families (understandable), and some of the honeymoon/couples sites seem to deal with wedding/honeymoon/spring break type of deals. Since the two of us are joyously enjoying our own childhoods while we still have the energy (and no children to need to share our toys:)), we plan on being super-busy and seeing the Kingdom through a pair of 40's YOs children (that'll be the two of us, since we live the mantra of it's never too late to be a kid).

We want it all, and while I am an unabashed frugal shopper, we have been saving for this for a while so (gulp!) we can deal with some extra expenses. Being married for 12 years, together for 15, and with exactly ONE vacation under the guise of our first anniversary under our belt, we want this vacation to be fun. We are honest in that we really don't deal well with packages which dictate where to eat, which day to visit which area (which cancels out the Disney cruises which I understand are very well-prepared). Since we will be flying into Orlando from Ft Lauderdale where DH will be finishing some work-related courses, we do not plan to use a rental car, and also plan to deal with the extra expense of staying within WDW rather than the lower priced resorts just outside.

Where can we begin? Frankly, I am at a loss. We plan for a stay of at least a week, DH is a ride junkie, while I love simply to wander, and we both plan on seeing as much of the entire park as we can. I have been searching through the forums and archives, and simply find way too much information, which could be a good thing otherwise, but like I keep repeating, I can't seem to focus on a single point.

Any advice, any do's and don'ts, any specific spots to begin, anything and everything will be greatly appreciated.

Brandy and Danny

Wow, the "World" is your oyster. . .let be then begin with questions. The first thing is to figure out where you want to stay and what price range you can afford. To help you better decide what you want - do you frequently stay in budget hotels when traveling?, do you like a little more upscale?. Is there a park that interests you more than the others? These will help narrow down your resort choices.

The time of year you are planning on going is during the food and wine festival. This happens at Epcot and is a great way to sample foods from around the world. If this interests you and something you might want to take advantage of, let me suggest the Yacht or Beach Club resort or the Boardwalk Inn. These are Disney Deluxe hotels and within walking distance of Epcot and a walk to DHS or boatride there. If you prefer Magic Kingdom, may I suggest the Contemporary, Grand Floridian or Poly. All on the monorail and again Deluxe properties. A bit cheaper but still deluxe would be Animal Kingdom lodge and Wilderness Lodge. If you are a bit more budget concious but still want a nice place to stay, may I suggest taking a look at the mods. For a total Disney immersion and Icons that are larger than life, choose a value resort.

This would be my starting place.

first.. :welcome: to the Dis... a great place to ask for any of your Disney question and look for answers and lots of possiblities...

As I was reading your post.. my 1st question in mind is where do you want to stay... granted that this will be the 1st time you are going to trek at the Promise Land... but do you have any thoughts on your lodging accomodations... There's the Value... which I love and enjoy because it really takes me to the "heart" of memories and feelings when I see all the big icons... no room service no bell hops and no indoor hallway... but the theming is great.. the price is good and the it is bursting with fun and energy... now if you need a lil extra.. I guess we need to touch moderates... they offer table service location in their resorts and a few inches bigger than the value.. bus services maybe a lil better(this I am not sure off since I only had stayed at CBR for a day and back then had not tried the bus system).... now if it is amenities you are looking for... then we should consider deluxe... monorail resorts...

so thats my contribution... ponder on where you want to stay... and while at it... include the activities... when I plan a trip for friends and families.. I basically need my vacation board.. write all the things you want to do an then when you have the full skeleton you can one by one incorporate it into one big great fun Trip... Good Luck..

I hope I did not just confuse you more :grouphug:

I would probably start by taking a look at the Birnbaum's Disney World book. It isn't the most detailed by any means (Unofficial Guide - Sehlinger is probably the best for detail), but it will give you a decent overview.

Another thing you will want to decide, and fairly quickly, is where you want to stay. It sounds like you're staying onsite, so you should think about whether you want to stay in a value, moderate or deluxe. Also, you may want to think about whether you want to get in on the free dining plan (I think it goes thru very early October). If you do, you should really book something shortly, because the window for making dining reservations will open for you in the next few weeks (currently resort guests can book from Aug. 25th for their length of stay -- up to 10 days). Since you're staying onsite, the free dining makes sense to me, but it isn't necessarily for everyone. Keep in mind that because free dining is going on while you're there, that will also make the resort reservations a little more competitive. But, since you're doing September, it shouldn't be too bad. I would be inclined to go ahead and book a package at some resort if you know your dates...you can always change the accommodations later.

Transportation shouldn't be an issue for you. Your ride to and from the airport will be Magical Express. Once at your resort, you can use Disney transportation (usually buses) to get to the various parks. There are resorts where transportation is easier than buses. For example, you can monorail to the Magic Kingdom (and Epcot, indirectly) from the Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian. Of course, those are all deluxe resorts. You can take a boat from Wilderness Lodge to the Magic Kingdom as well (and the Lodge is also a deluxe, but not quite as deluxe as the others).

AGain, I would get your accommodations (and a package) set up pretty quick, so you can make your dining reservations in a few weeks, then take the time and see which resort appeals to you and your budget. Don't let everything overwhelm you -- you're lucky to be going in a "slow" period, so the crowds shouldn't be too intense.

I have to agree, since you haven't taken a trip for so long...if you can afford it, I would go Deluxe. I would reccomend either the Beach Club or the Polynesian. Once you decide on your resort, call and get it booked, put a deposit on the room and get the confirmation number.

You're not too far from your 90 day window for any food you may want. It sounds like you're not interested in the dining plan, but you may still want to make reservations for a special meal or two. Once you have your room reservation, you can book all of your dining once you're 90 days from check in. I would reccomend, at the very least a nice romantic dinner, and a character meal (either breakfast or dinner).

Also be sure to get the park hopper option as it allows you total flexibility on going to whatever park you want at any time.

Here's my suggestions for room types:

Deluxe: Polynesian or Beach Club
Moderate: Port Orleans Riverside
Value: Pop Century

Just take it a step at a time and you'll be fine. Since you're not doing a dining plan, you won't have to worry much about when and where to book your meals.

:woohoo::banana: - this is me and DH dancing....in private...over this vacation.

Wow.

Lots of information, all very very VERY helpful. I'm printing out all the responses to help me get started on my planning (I'm getting a notebook and glittery pens and getting all wonderfully silly about this).

The last major trip we planned (as in ME planned) was our wedding/honeymoon/vacation in Scotland. This is wwaaayyy back in '97, pre-most internet sites known today, and I somehow managed to book flights, rental car (with unlimited mileage), B&Bs (much much better than dealing with hotels and tour packages), and arranging for a civil wedding at a local registrar's office. We only had a basic set of things we did want to see (Edinburgh castle, Loch Ness), the rest we winged it, and we had a blast.

I can see our first (but not last) trip to WDW would be similar to this.

From basic reading, we will most likely start with the Magic Kingdom and Epcot (the wine and food festival sounds perfect), go with the park hopper option, and invest in several pairs of decent walking shoes.

Way too exciting....there goes the rest of my workday, planning my vacation....

Thanks everyone!

The only problem with staying at the WDW Swan or Dolphin is that while it is located on property, it is not a WDW hotel, so you do not get Magical Express, and you can't get any form of Disney dining plan. The location is prime, but it has more the feeling of a convention resort than a Disney resort.

If you are looking for something nice in that price range, check out Coronado Springs resort, Caribbean beach resort, or the Port Orleans resorts. The Port Orleans resorts also have a boat to the Downtown Disney shopping area. Port orleans French Quarter is a nice romantic resort that might be great for you and your hubby :goodvibes
