We just added a second story to a ranch, as you are doing, and we put the laundry upstairs and love it. My last house had it across from the family room and although it was convenient to fold it there with the kids and tv., etc., half the time it wouldn't get carried upstairs and I'd have a laundry basket lying around.

As for it being upstairs, here in MA it is code to have a pan under the washer in case of a problem. Also we installed it with steel hoses as opposed to the rubber ones that can burst. I love having it up there. As far as running upstairs, when I go up to make the beds or clean, whatever, that's when I throw in laundry. It's really no bother. My vote is for upstairs!

We just added a 2nd story to our home too. I made sure my DH added enough room for the washer & dryer up there in the linen closet. Ours are in the basement presently and when the upstairs is finished (sheetrock just done), we'll be moving the machines upstairs.

Why lug the sheets/towels/clothes down 2 stories now?

Besides, we've added a 2nd bathroom up there as well, so we'll be using that one more often and the clothes can be tossed in the laundry closet from there.

Some people complain of noise, but it all depends on the time of day you usually do your laundry I guess.

Congrats on more room in your home - it's so exciting isn't it?

Mine is on the main level off the family room I find it very convenient to do laundry not as convenient to put it away. My laundry gets put away, but the kids is hard because because if they are in their rooms they are sleeping and if not I cant leave them downsatirs alone. In my othewr house it was in the basement I HATED that I was aslways behind in the laundry. Now it gets done, but I feel the kids live out of the basket from the laundry room

we've just moved ours upstairs and I love it, the alternative in the Uk is in the kitchen, and I HATED laundry in the kitchen, having it upstairs is ideal. No more piles of laundry all over the place, and I don't even mind ironing without the tv, I seem to get it done a lot faster without the tv on!

In both of the last two houses we built, we put the laundry near the family room and kitchen, since that is where I am most of the time. It does require carrying baskets upstairs with clean clothes, but it keeps me from running up and down to catch the drier. Our new house will have the bedroom on the main level, and the laundry will be on the main level again, but on the opposite end of the house from the bedroom. Again, I wanted it near the family room/kitchen.
