where is the boardwalk in relation to the CR?

i have heard you can buy some groceries at the boardwalk somewhere?
can we walk there from the contemporary resort? If so, how far is it?

No, you can't.
You can walk from CR to the Magic Kingdom bus area, then take the Boardwalk bus. Or you can take a cab. Or you can take the monorail from CR to the TTC, switch over to the Epcot monorail, enter Epcot, walk through the park and out the other side - the International Gateway - and walk over to the Boardwalk.
Or you could take a cab to a supermarket.

Techincally you could--but I won't recommend it while carrying a load of stuff. Another alternative would be to boat over to WL, since that is also a DVC resort, they have a "store" there too. Also, kaytieeldr made some good suggestions about shopping services, depending on the amount of stuff you're looking to buy. Remember thou, the rooms at the CR are not equiped with kitchens.

Depending on what you want - check the shops at the CR. They may have what you want if it's snacks, bread, milk, juice, etc.

Another option is to take the boat over to the WL. You can get milk, bread and a few other items there.
