we went to WDW, not knowing what they cost! A basic one was over $60. A boy in line ahead of us at Tatooine Traders built a double bladed one that cost his mom over $150!!!!
Those aren't the normal ones...I've read quite a bit about the WDW byo sabers and it's about 20 there (and include a pin), and it's the same cost, approx, at DLR (no pin though).
Awesome!!!! Thank you so so much! I am so excited about this as my 5 year old son is going to flip. His current light saber just fell apart today, 2 days before we leave, so it is incredibly perfect timing. (Maybe he is smarter than I think and deliberately trashed it LOL).
Note: they are BIG. They are bigger than your average 4 or 5 year old, when fully extended. They are HEAVY. They do NOT collapse entirely...you will see people say that they collapse, but they don't collapse *all the way*, into the handle, like the ones that are $7 at Target and $10 at Star Traders. And they don't have belt clips/hooks!!!!! So your 5 year old will be carrying that heavy, big thing around.
And though they tend to put extra color discs in the sabers for the littler kids, you cannot see the color in the daytime. They have to wait until it's dark to see the color. That was VERY disappointing to my son and husband. The red blades are red because they are red plastic. A double-ended one is only lit on ONE side.
It's all very disappointing, IMO, though FUN and a fun idea. Just...falls apart somewhere in the creation of it.
Also, they aren't really *toys*. You can't bash it around and expect it to last.
And our 4 year old found it so heavy that he either put it down or handed it to one of us, and it was left behind somewhere between PFF and TT...realized about 15 minutes later that it was gone, and it was gone forever, no one ever turned it in.
I really recommend buying the $7 ones at Target (last week our local store had them for $5.04!) or getting the exact same ones at the park stores for $10. DS can bash them on each other (he and hubby now own 4 between them...green, blue, red, and purple depending on what people are in their game), he can accidentally hit the cabinets and not do damage to saber or cabinet, etc. And they retract/collapse totally into the handle AND they have belt clips. If the byo one had a belt clip it would still be owned by us. DS might have lost his pants a few times from the sheer weight of it, but we'd still own it.
There's one more option that I'll talk about in a minute!
I just assumed they'd be $20 or so
They are.
The other option is a VERY cool one that we started seeing last December. It's $12 (still is, as of 2 days ago), is blue, lights up and makes sounds, AND it has Mickey heads on the "chrome" handle. And it has a belt hook.
We really do need to find a tiny screw to put into the bottom, b/c the bottom falls off and the batteries fall out (when DS drops it), but at least it has that little screw hole for the option! It's cute, not too much money, makes sounds and lights up, and again, has the Mickey heads.
