I've heard there is a Build Your Own Light Saber stand somewhere in Disnelyand (I know there is one at DW too, but I'm understanding DL has one as well). I've tried searching for this and can't find the location. Can someone help me know if it is in Disneyland or at Downtown Disney or where???

Thanks to the tips on this board, we are all geared up to (hopefully) get into the Jedi Training Academy, and assuming all goes well I want to celebrate by having my son build his own Saber.

Thanks in advance!!

In the Star Traders store when u exit Star Tours.

Awesome!!!! Thank you so so much! I am so excited about this as my 5 year old son is going to flip. His current light saber just fell apart today, 2 days before we leave, so it is incredibly perfect timing. (Maybe he is smarter than I think and deliberately trashed it LOL).

we went to WDW, not knowing what they cost! A basic one was over $60. A boy in line ahead of us at Tatooine Traders built a double bladed one that cost his mom over $150!!!!

If you have time to mail it or room to take it, consider buying the build-your-own kit from WalMart. I got one for around $38. It comes with multiple colored crystals and handles.

My son was convinced that because he was a Padawan due to completing the Jedi Academy he had to build his own lightsaber to complete his Jedi training. Talk about slick marketing!!! I let him do it, but went the cheapie route!

I will tell you our experience with this. DD was sooo excited to make her own saber. She had just "faught" Darth Vador in Jedi training and had her money ready to go. She made it and it was broken before she got to the register. No kidding. Parts just coming loose! And it did not collapse like the "real"one in the movie. She made the choice to get the premade one that collapses and is still playing with it 6 months later.
Just an FYI so your DS isn't too dissapointed.

Oh my! That is terribly expensive and they don't sound like good quality at all!!! We do have friends who got one from WDW for $20 (built it there) and they said their son loves it, but I'm not sure how much use it gets. I just assumed they'd be $20 or so :( Thanks for the heads-up. I might quit talking about it then and maybe just fighting Darth Vader will have to be fun enough for my kid without an extra-expensive saber to complete the experience.

The ones at the Star Tours gift shop are about $20 bucks. You choose a handle (they were all the same) and take the tubes and washer type things and twist it together. I think there were 5-6 separate bins that you got your 5-6 different parts from. So max would be $20 at the ST gift shop. Still broke and I had read others saying the same. The one she actually purchased was about $12 and came with batteries

The light saber building station is usually pretty busy, and $20 - $25 for the double saber sounds about right. I remember I wanted to buy my friend's son one as a gift, but thought it was too pricey.

For the Jedi Training Academy, I suggest arriving at least 20 minutes before showtime so you can get a good spot in the front. And I would recommend making a Star Wars themed sign to help your son stand out more. I once went with 3 kids, I made signs for each of them and all 3 were selected. Also go to an earlier show, if he's not selected the first time around at least you'll still have additional show to attend and try again.

I've only seen the DisneyWorld training academy on the internet, and personally I think the Disneyland show is a lot better. It's really cool and chilling to see the stage rise and have Darth Vader emerge from a cloud of fog.

That shows that it is around $20 and the same for WDW.

There are however limited edition models at $70 for example in some WDW and DLR shops.

Those aren't the normal ones...I've read quite a bit about the WDW byo sabers and it's about 20 there (and include a pin), and it's the same cost, approx, at DLR (no pin though).

Note: they are BIG. They are bigger than your average 4 or 5 year old, when fully extended. They are HEAVY. They do NOT collapse entirely...you will see people say that they collapse, but they don't collapse *all the way*, into the handle, like the ones that are $7 at Target and $10 at Star Traders. And they don't have belt clips/hooks!!!!! So your 5 year old will be carrying that heavy, big thing around.

And though they tend to put extra color discs in the sabers for the littler kids, you cannot see the color in the daytime. They have to wait until it's dark to see the color. That was VERY disappointing to my son and husband. The red blades are red because they are red plastic. A double-ended one is only lit on ONE side.

It's all very disappointing, IMO, though FUN and a fun idea. Just...falls apart somewhere in the creation of it.

Also, they aren't really *toys*. You can't bash it around and expect it to last.

And our 4 year old found it so heavy that he either put it down or handed it to one of us, and it was left behind somewhere between PFF and TT...realized about 15 minutes later that it was gone, and it was gone forever, no one ever turned it in.

I really recommend buying the $7 ones at Target (last week our local store had them for $5.04!) or getting the exact same ones at the park stores for $10. DS can bash them on each other (he and hubby now own 4 between them...green, blue, red, and purple depending on what people are in their game), he can accidentally hit the cabinets and not do damage to saber or cabinet, etc. And they retract/collapse totally into the handle AND they have belt clips. If the byo one had a belt clip it would still be owned by us. DS might have lost his pants a few times from the sheer weight of it, but we'd still own it.

There's one more option that I'll talk about in a minute!

I just assumed they'd be $20 or so :(

They are.

The other option is a VERY cool one that we started seeing last December. It's $12 (still is, as of 2 days ago), is blue, lights up and makes sounds, AND it has Mickey heads on the "chrome" handle. And it has a belt hook.

We really do need to find a tiny screw to put into the bottom, b/c the bottom falls off and the batteries fall out (when DS drops it), but at least it has that little screw hole for the option! It's cute, not too much money, makes sounds and lights up, and again, has the Mickey heads. :goodvibes

Pic of a slightly tall new 4 year old with the byo saber...first "collapsed" as far as it goes, and also extended.

You could buy one at Walmart for about $8.00 bring it, and pull it out as a surprise after the Jedi training... No Mickey of course but does have Star Wars on the packaging.

We are leaving on Monday and thanks to this board we have signs made, ready to go and safely packed! :thumbsup2 (I also read the bit about folding them up small so they don't get confiscated at entry). We are on a mission to support DS getting selected!

Bumbershoot those are very helpful pics and your boy looks adorable. I am glad to know about the nature of the sabers beforehand so we can let DS understand it is more of a special thing that a true battle saber. Obviously his current one broke from too many duels with his dad, so I think we'll replace it with a cheapie AND he will get a special one to put in his room from Disneyland. He has a lot of Star Wars stuff in his room, and I know exactly where his special saber can go. For $20 we are for sure going to create one!!

OH but where did you get the Mickey one?? Target? Or somewhere in Disney? I might look into that option still.

Thanks again so so much for all the detailed advice!!

The Mickey one (lights up, makes sound) is from Star Traders! It's the most brilliant thing they have, IMO.

The cheapies (10 bucks at DLR, 7ish at Target) are the exact same thing as each other...all Hasbro, all with Lucasfilm TM on them...and they are what the kids use during the Jedi Academy.

FYI they also sell a Clone Wars build your own *kit* at Star Traders, and it's the same you can get at Target. Looking online, it's under 30 at Target, and I'll have to check my notes, but I think I remember it being 34 at Star Traders.

They also sell the "spring loaded" sabers at both Star Traders and Target, with the same bit of a price difference.

I love LOVE being able to just pull stuff out of my backpack just when DS wants it...or to be able to keep promises when I say "we're not buying that here, but at home it can go on the Target list"...

As it has been posted, the only place that I know of where you can build one, is the gift shop you walk thru when you exit Star Tours.

Cheers :)
