Where do you buy Spices?

I LOVE Penzey's. Even my kids love going there and playing in their little kid area while I shop. I've never had a spice I didn't like from there!!! They have AWESOME gift sets as well!!

Penzey's here too.

For those of you who use Penzeys, is their Onion and Garlic Powder worth it? I'm running low on both (Generic) and I just started using Penzeys which I love but didn't know if there was enough of a difference to make the trip.

I use Penzey's Onion and Garlic Powder - they are definately better than generic. I also really like their Garlic Salt. However, if I'm running low and can't make it there, I do get the generic from the grocery store to keep until I can make it there...

I am another Penzey's fan!! Love all of their stuff - especially their blends and the cinnamon. But I have a love-hate relationship with their mailing list......those free coupons for a particular spice always cost me $20 in other spices! :rotfl2:

Also love, love, love their Chili 9000. I add it to my homemade chili and it does definitely add a different level of flavor.

For vanilla, however, I cannot beat Arizona Vanilla Company online. Excellent choices of extract, beans and pastes. Yum. Awesome quality.

Another vote for Penzy's here! Our favorites are Tuscan Sunset and Florida Seasoned Pepper. Oohhh and also the Baking Spice - works in just about all baked goods, pies, etc.

Great gift for weddings or the holidays - anyone that loves to cook would love a gift.

The prices are really comparable to the McCormick's spices at the grocery store. We live about 30 minutes from the store in Arlington Ma and try to get there every couple of months.

I have two Penzey's boxes with plastic bags of spices in them, filed alphabetically. Plus some jars in the cupboard.

Some things that we use regularly: Greek and Italian salad dressing mixes. I also use them for marinades or rubs. 4S (either Smokey or not) on all sorts of things. Epazote is a must in our family for bean-based dishes.

I have bought seasonings from Ocean State Job Lot (.89 here and they're not very good) but sometimes you just need to not spend a lot of money.

I've also bought spices from Costco for the same budgetary needs but they do have a better quality than OSJL. But they're still not up to Penzey's quality.

Like another poster said, if I'm making something special or want people to really love it, I'll make sure I use Penzey's spices.

Thanks! Never heard of Penzey's. Went to their website and requested a catalog. :)

Penzey's rocks!! If you ever get the chance to go to one of their stores, go for it. You get the chance to smell everything, and they have little recipe cards all over the store. Yum.

when am I ever going to finish a bottle of molassess? :upsidedow

cheers,
:flower3:

You can always use molasses & white sugar as a substitute for brown sugar in baking & recipes. 1 cup sugar + 1 tablespoon molasses = 1 cup light brown sugar, and 1 cup sugar + 2 tablespoons molasses = 1 cup dark brown sugar.

And yes, Penzeys rocks. I love their sandwich sprinkle, chicken taco seasoning, chip & dip seasoning & Fox Point blend. =)

One advantage we have is that we have a large Amish community in Ohio and they sell spices in bulk so that is where I get mine. The price is about 1/3 of that the stores sell it for.

I buy my my basic spices at BJ's. I don't think the quality is very good in the Dollar Tree/ Big Lot spices. I had never heard of Penzeys, thanks for all tthose who posted. They have a store about 45 min. away from me, close to a mall I like, so I will definitely check them out.

Another vote for Penzey's here. We buy all kinds of different spices there. My boyfriends favorite is the Fox Pointe Seasoning and I guess mine would be the Chip and Dip seasoning. One of my favorite items is the dried jalapenos. They are great to put in egg dishes.

I go through lots of chili powder so I get that from Aldi's, a big jar for $1.

I get my spices from a website called myspicer.com. I do a lot of cooking and find that I can get all my esoteric spices from this website.

I really love their honey powder. I use it in place of honey for a lot of stuff. same flavor without the mess.

Does anyone know where you can buy Maple Pepper?

They used to sell this at Dakota Restaurant here in CT. The nearest one closed and it's too far to drive to the next one. So I'm looking for someplace to mail order it.

Penzey's hands down!! Once we were introduced to them we got hooked. Now it is just automatic that we get a Penzey's gift certificate from a relative for Christmas- then we stock up. Plus are lucky enough to have them locally to walk in and enjoy the wonderful smells...:goodvibes

never heard of penzeys, gonna go check it out!!

i buy my blends from wildtree, salt/pepper/garlic salt from grocery store!
