Hello all, I have 5 adults who are looking for a new resort. We made our first visit May 2007 and stayed at the CBR, the resort was nice, but we spent so much time on the busses. My brother is in a manual wheelchair (he has Spina Bifida) and cannot walk at all.

Our first choice in the GF, but I am concerned because central reservations will let me book a room and they state it will have 2 queen beds (one of which will be lowered) and a roll in shower. Has anyone seen a room like this?

On our first visit, the room had 1 king bed and a roll in shower, and the staff were nice enough to give us the room next door as they were unable to accomodate us. I am not trying to get a free room, only trying to see if anyone has seen a room as has been described.

Other than monorail hotel, does anyone have any other suggestions, as we would like to get to the parks on more than just buses (boats, be able walk).

I have looked at the Villas at Boardwalk and Beach Club, any one with thoughts?

THanks!

DH and I stayed in a HC room last August at WL that had the king bed and "roll in" shower and it was really nice. I don't know what the room next door was like, but it did have an adjoining door. WL has boat transportation to MK and buses to the other parks. It is one of our favorites because of the atmosphere. I also liked being all in one building.

We stayed at Pop in June with mom in a HC "roll in" shower room/king bed, we had the adjoining room next door with 2 doule beds. They do only have bus transport, but we were always able to get on the first bus, except once and I think the lift wasn't working on that bus.

These are the only 2 resorts I have any experience with that have the roll in shower. An error was made last December and we didn't get the rooms we needed at CR or AKL, so we only had a tub with a seat and side rails and that was difficult, but we managed.

We will be staying at POR at the end of the month and POFQ in December.

I wish I had more info for you, but someone else here probably will.

The only problem with WL is that the boat is not always w/c accessible. If the water level is too low, you can't roll on, or get off. They should get a ramp for these instances.

We stay at FW and have the same issue with the boat. A couple of times the boat was too high, so he just had people load little by little until the boat and the dock met and then I rolled on.

If the water is too low, you will need to take a bus. I have to say that my experience with the busses at WL have not been great. But those few times could have just been bad luck or timing on my part.

I would definitely recommend a monorail resort if you can swing it. I know some rooms sleep 5, but I would guess that those would not have a roll in shower. Call special reservations and discuss what you need with them and see what they can do for you. One of these days I would like to try the Poly, but right now it is not in our budget.

Hope you find just the right spot.

If you would think about staying off-site maybe a villa is more comfortable than a hotel room. We rented an 4 bedroom 3 bath with roll in shower Villa located in Davenport. There are five of us going as well. The home is completely wheelchair friendly and it even includes a pool lift for the private pool.

Thanks all, just booked at the Grand Floridian! They have a room with 2 queens, a day bed and roll in shower (so they say). If not I am sure they will offer us an adjoining room like last year.

Can't wait!

If I were you, I would call Special Needs directly to make sure they have you set up for the "roll in" shower room, because CRO messed us up for last December and it was a difficult trip not having what was needed. If you need the number PM me and I will give it to you. I call them everytime to make sure my request is right, because they are the ones that block the type of room needed.

If you have the number of people who fit in the room, they will not offer you a connecting room.
There are rooms in many WDW resorts that have roll in showers and have 2 beds. There are also rooms that have a single king size bed with a roll in shower. All the rooms need to have a 36 inch wide 'access' lane for the wheelchair to get around; if the resort has 2 beds in the room, the room is large enough for that.
If you are concerned that you won't have enough space with 5 people in one room and want a King room plus another room, you should rent 2 rooms. That is the only way to make sure to have it.

The phone number for Special Reservations is listed in the disABILITIES FAQs thread; it is (407) 939-7807.

I am excited to be staying the Grand Floridian! The room we reserved is supposed to have 2 queen beds, a daybed and a wheel in shower, so if it does we should all be fine. I was originally going to reserve 2 rooms, but we are exhausted after spending the day in the parks, so we will bring earplugs (to muffle the snoring) and deal with it. If they offer us a complimentary adjoining room, of course I will smile and accept, but either way we are all just excited about returning. My brother (Kevin with Spinal Bifida) is still watching the videos from last time, and is really excited about the piano player in the GF lobby.

Thanks all.....

Just an update, I called Disabilies Guest Services as suggested, and my room is a wheel in shower at GF! So we will see, I will be surprised if they can still put the day bed in this room, to keep the 36" clearance, but as I said earlier I am happy to be able to return to WDW with my family, and especially happy we can stay at the GF.

Anything else I should know, please advise....

We were all there in May 2007 and had a great time, our only negative was the amount of time we spent on the busses (hence switching from CBR to GF).

So May 2009 here we come...
