Jenna - We had high winds and lost power for several days in Katy when Alicia hit in 1983. Most businesses were closed along Hwy 6 I believe for 2-3 days. Just make sure you have plenty of non perishable food, water, flashlights, etc.

Thanks for the info! I am getting more worried as time goes on, my husband just called from the HEB on Hwy 6 and Keith Harrow, and he told me there is almost nothing left! We are good on almost everything but batteries, I guess me and DS will go on a hunt for those tomorrow! I was in high school when Alicia hit, and only remember being excited that school was out for a few days!
I am in Cypress and this storm is scaring me. Like Katy, Cypress is on the west side of Houston which will be closer to the path Rita is predicted to take once she comes onshore. I'm not as worried about flooding as I am about sustained hurricane force winds. My in-laws and BIL live in Sugarland and Richmond and are leaving town.
If you are hoping to find supplies, I would go out as early as possible in the morning. The Wal-mart out here got in another shipment of water tonight. They were out of everything earlier today. We are ok on supplies. I wish we had stocked up a little better on batteries though
I was thinking the same thing as Planogirl. I would check Oklahoma. I lived in Tulsa for almost a year. The flights from DFW to Tulsa were constant. Also, the drive wasn't bad either. You can try Oklahoma City, Tulsa, or other cities. I honestly wouldn't go to Louisiana. That is my home state, and I love it. However, it is full in all hotels because of Katrina. Plus, they will get lots of rain from Rita because the eastern side of a hurricane gets more rain.
I think that Arkansas would be real nice too but is probably more booked up than Oklahoma. I can picture evacuees from southern Louisiana heading up into Arkansas but not Oklahoma as much.
No advice on hotels but just wanted to wish you well. I hope Rita slows down. We were supposed to fly to Houston tomorrow for gymnastics. needless to say we are not going. Not sure how Huntsville and Conroe will fare but we all had rooms booked there that we will be canceeling.
Good Luck
I have an extra bedroom & bath that I had offered to Katrina victims, but it's still empty. If there are any DIS'ers that need somewhere to evacuate to let me know. I'm happy to help if it's possible. (hopefully we'll be spared another big hit)
We are in The Woodlands, and we can't decide whether we will stay here or not. I am not worried too much about flooding, we are on pretty high ground. But I AM quite worried about the trees surrounding our house. Some of them are really big.
I can't seem to find hotels anywhere that have vacancies for the weekend!

Lil mermaid if you plan on staying in the woodlands Keep checking for vacancies. I know that was another suggested area to us so between Huntsville, Conroe and the Woodlands there should be a ton of rroms. Stay safe.
