I will put in a negative vote for Rainforest Cafe. Wait is usually awful and service matches the wait and that seems to be a universal problem for Rainforest. Yes, for dinner you should try to make ressies (PS) including (and especially) for DTD restaurants (some there do take ressies but you have to call the restaurant directly and cannot do it through Disney). However, that time of year, you can usually get a time close to what you want by just calling the day before (and often just the morning of). For after park hours with a 5 year old, you have a huge number of choices although it would help to know where you are staying. One thing to note is that the park restaurants generally take seating up to closing time (and thus are really open for about an hour or longer afterward). All the deluxe Disney resorts have good restaurants and you can do table serve or buffet. Our favorite buffets outside the parks are Cape May at Beach Club, Park Fair at Grand Floridian, and Trails End at Fort Wilderness. ESPN Club at BoardWalk is great for burgers and the like and watching sports. Palios at Swan/Dolphin is a good Italian restaurant. One thing to understand is that essentially all restaurants are kid friendly and informal (and you will see many families with kids in them)-- the exception is Victoria and Albert's at Grand Floridian which is really an adult place that requires jacket (and a possible for that couples only dinner, although I would recommend California Grill at Contemporary). Our preferred in DTD are Portobello Yacht Club (Italian) and Fulton's (seafood). If you go to Epcot, have dinner at one of the World Showcase restaurants -- our best are Tippanyaki in Japan, Le Celiere in Canada (steak and chees soup), and the Biergarten in Germany (buffet, nightly entertainment, and obscene sized beer steins)
