I bought the Target 2-year replacement plan, but they are saying it doesn't cover cracked screens. I don't have an Apple store near me, and it says it costs $99 to repair on Apple's website. There is a site called iCracked that will send you a do-it-yourself kit for $49.99, but not sure how reputable it is. Have any of you had to get one fixed?

You're better off just to back everything up in iTunes and then trash it.

So EVERYTHING will get backed up into iTunes? DD is so attached to her iPod. I tried telling her we could get a refurbished 4th gen 8g one from apple.com for $129, which seems like the thing to do, but she really wants me to see if we can get it fixed.

My DD's friend has cracked her screen a couple of times. Just get a replacement kit off eBay. You have nothing to lose in trying it. So ... What does the Best Buy replacement cover if not cracked screens?

It was with Target, but I swear the employees told me it would cover cracked screens. Was your DDs a 2nd or 3rd gen? I guess with the 4th gen, it's more involved and is replacing more than the screen (can't remember what they said - LCD something?)

I could swear it was a 4th gen but it's her friends iPod. My DD cracked her screen too but I have not fixed it yet.

My DH has fixed two 4th gen screens by ordering from Ebay for around $20 each. He says it was fairly complicated, but tutorials on YouTube were very helpful.

Both ipods work great after the fix!!

Good luck!

Wow, that certainly would be worth it. I'll at least peruse Ebay to see...not sure if my DH or I are that savvy to do it. Will have to see if DD would be willing to risk us messing it up. :)

My DDs 4th gen screen was fixed at a place called Digi Express at a local mall(they fix all "i" things") -- it was $75 -- and they were running a special at the time that she could get a free color border for her screen.

I did this with mine as well but mine is not a 4th gen. It was a little tricky but we did get it on and it worked for a couple more months before dying of a dead battery.

We went to our mall and there was a stand that fixed screens there. We got our sons fixed at the mall and I watched the guy do it. We could not have done it ourselves. My other sons broke too and we took it in to Apple Store and they gave him a new one for $99. it was the 4th generation 32g. Just make sure you back it up so everything is saved!

Everything won't be backed up. The apps, music and games will still be there, but she will have to start over in some games. For example, I was on level 89 in Jewel Mania, but when my phone was replaced, I had to start at level 1 again.

That's why she wants to keep hers, I bet - too much work to put everything back on. It works, just with a shattered screen so if I screw it up replacing the screen myself, I will be toast lol! But when the price is so close to getting a new (refurbished) one, it's hard. I'm looking at kits on eBay and Amazon right now though and maybe it will explain enough about how to do it for me to know if DH or I could even attempt on our own. If not, may have to pony up $99 at the local place here to fix. Why do those screens have to be so fragile!!!!

Had the Same problem with Target warranty! Sales person told me it covered cracked screen when I purchased DD 4th Gen iPod. When I called in on the warranty after the screen broke they told me it did not!!! I was so mad! That will be the last warranty I ever purchase from Target! We got DD a fifth gen from Walmart and purchased their warranty because theirs Does cover the screen!!

Oh good to know on Walmart! Yeah, makes you wonder if Target employees are instructed to tell people that.
