We are going to DL in April and we usually surprise our son with Disney dollars. The Disney store no longer carries them and E-bay and the pricing are more for people looking to collect them.

Is there anyway to purchase a small amount without getting scalped in regards to prices?

Thanks

:)

I believe that Disney has discontinued Disney Dollars. The old ones are still valid, but they're issuing no new ones, which is why the ones on eBay are going for collectors' prices. For spending money in the parks, you'll now want to use gift cards.

You will have to wait, you can only get them at the resort now. The problem with doing by the phone is they cost more than face value.

Don't worry they are available. Rumors about them being discontinued are only rumors not true.

If you have a Disney Visa, you can put reward dollars on a gift card(s) and give those out to your family.

After they stopped selling them at the Disney Stores, many people started making their own interim "disney dollars", then exchange them at the park by buying the real ones.

I didn't check to see how old your son is, but we were surprised by our son at 5. He had never been in charge of his money at all, until the "free birthday" promotion, when he got his very own giftcard (since we had APs). He needed subtraction help, but apart from that he was very good at considering it real money and tempering his purchases based on the total he had.

So maybe a giftcard would work just as well!

(any receipt given after a purchase paid with a GC will have the amount left on that card...you might also find it helpful to put a small post-it note on the back (I get a rectangular kind that is sticky the whole way, making sure to keep it off the magnetic strip) and write the current amount there. Or just use a sharpie. :))
