Where can I get a map?

Our next trip home is in December and being new DVC members we don't know our way around. We are considering getting groceries but I read somewhere on here that there is a Wal-Mart close to SSR where we will be staying. We would prefer to take a couple of hours and do our own shopping. Can anyone help us out. What would the cost of a taxi be, or is in within walking distance and how do you get there? Thanks!

Hello to Ontario residents! There really isn't a close Wal-Mart, you do have to off-property for one . . . but it isn't a far drive:

The easiest way to get your groceries (without car) would be to order your groceries in advance from SSR's grocery service:

that say (going in and out the main entrance at SSR - not the side entrance closer to DTD - although that one would be closer).

at SSR turn right - at stop sign turn right - then go to the traffic light (not the one for the fire station) turn left - get in the right lane. (hotel Plaza) - then when the road quits (there is a shopping center across) turn right - now you are 535 - apopeka/vineland - stay on this road for about 2 miles - Walmart is on the right (you will see a Hess gas station - next right after this thing). If you miss it you will end up on US 192. - that is walmart.

now publix - go the same way - once you get on 535 get in the left lane. go under I4 - next traffic light turn left - at the end of this road is a Publix on your left. (if you go to the end you are on International Drive ID)

Thanks so much. We used Garden Grocer in December and it worked great, but we did find that everything was really inflated, that when ordering online we ended up ordering way to much of some stuff and not enough of other stuff. Mousekeeping loved the snacks we left them. Thanks again for the great resources!

A Good Map Is Hard To Find ....

I was so suprised the first time we stayed at OKW and I went to the front desk to ask for directions to the nearest grocery store. NO ONE had a good answer or even possible directions. I couldn't believe that they didn't have a map showing some different places to shop and how to get there from each resort. It just seemed like a logical thing that members would ask for since one of the advantages of DVC is having a full kitchen and some members might actually want to use it.

I know that there is a "store" at all of the resorts, but they are fairly limited. I know that you can order groceries from Disney and other places, but what if you just need to make a quick trip anyway?!?!

I spoke to a CM manager and told him my thoughts and he reccommended to put it in writing on a comment card, which I did. I sent a letter to DVC when I returned home and have continued to do this after each vacation hoping that eventually it will happen. I no longer need the map because we have gone so many times! but I thought new members or members having a car for the first time might appreciate this.

What do you think, shouldn't a map like this be available at each resort? It wouldn't have to just show grocery/shopping places, it could show other things like nearest hospital/clinic, etc.

Thanks Jennie, and you are right. I guess I too, will get out the pen and paper and start writing. Maybe if we all write it will happen sooner rather than later (if at all)! You also never know when you may need to visit the hospital. We were in the Dominican last summer and my DD ended up with an ear infection and we kept getting conflicting information on where to go, so she didn't get it treated until we got home. So knowing everything around us is almost a necessity! Have a great Day!!

Or, if you are looking primarily for groceries, suntan lotion, etc. we like Winn Dixie.

Follow spiceycat's directions to get out off Disney property, but take a left instead of a right on 535. Just a couple intersections down on the right you will see ABC Liquors, Winn Dixie is right next to it.

You also mentioned a hospital. There is a Centra Care immediately on the left after leaving Hotel Plaza blvd on 535.

Still not walking distance, but very close to Downtown Disney and SSR.
