Any national grocery stores that carry it, or very large regional stores?

I'm pretty sure both Wegman's and Whole Foods carries Greek yogurt.

Ah, I was hoping Wegman's.... Closest one is 20 miles away, but I get down that way about once a month!

I hear that one is being built 5 miles from me. Can't wait!

Are you talking about the Tzisiki (sp?) sauce? If so Coscto carries it. Its also very easy to make.

No, not that. Greek yogurt is this really thick yogurt, like halfway between the consistency of yogurt and cream cheese.

In case you can't find it at a local grocer, an acceptable substitute is yogurt cheese, which you can make yourself by:

placing plain yogurt in cheese cloth or a strainer and letting the liquid drain out. What's left is yogurt cheese.

It is actually fairly easy to make also...just takes time and the yogurt you use must be plain. My Mom used to make it all the time.

GreekYogurt (Yiaourti)
from the Traditional Greek Cooking by George Moudiotis.

Greek style yogurt is thicker and creamier with a higher fat content than typical yogurts found in the U.S. Typical fat content of the cow's milk yogurt is 9% as opposed the U.S. yogurts are less than 4% fat.
I N G R E D I E N T S
1 litre (2-1/4 pints) of full-fat milk
2 to 3 tablespoons of commercial plain yoghurt or
home-made yoghurt (room temperature) mixed with a few tablespoons of milk

I N S T R U C T I O N S
Bring milk to just under boiling point and then pour the milk into a glass or earthenware dish. Let the milk cool to about 42°C/104°F. Pour the yogurt/milk mixture into the milk carefully without disturbing the skin that may have formed on the surface of the milk. Cover with a cloth, place in a warm, draft-free place for 8 to 12 hours or overnight, and do not disturb it until the yoghurt thickens. Drain any excess liquid and store in the fridge for 4 to 5 days.

To make a "thick" yoghurt, remove the skin on the surface of the yoghurt just made and pour the yoghurt into a muslin bag. Hang the bag over a bowl and let drain for about 2 hours or until the desired thickness is obtained.

I think you are in around the Collegeville area??? There is a Greek restaurant on Main Street in Trooper near the corner of Main and Trooper Rds. (used to be the old Sub Time restaurant). Anyway, they are authentic Greeks and although the restaurant is also a pizzeria type place, they have unbelievable Greek food. I'm sure they would have it. If you go, tell them Kim and Manny (my FIL) sent you :thumbsup2 .

I know your west of Philly so you can find a Trader Joes in Media,Ardmore, Center City,Wayne & Abington

They would know you? We live 6 blocks from there and have not been there yet. It always looks like it is closed.

Yep... my FIL is Greek and as you know, Greeks stick together ;) . Ask for Mario... he's the owner, a GREAT guy and is always there. He always gets stuff for my FIL "from the country"... bread, oils, etc. We are there at least once a week, most times more often. I know it always looks closed but it is open. You should give it a try. They also do take out.

ETA: My husband and I are there at least once a week... my FIL much more often. Chances are you would run into him there. He's a fixture :teeth:

I think I will stop in later today and mention you! I'm not a HUGE fan of Greek food, but a nice gyro is fine!
